He was, but that was the best way to keep economy going at the time, it's a long story... He was one of those guys who think for the whole country and not particular individuals.

That's a very long story, you gotta read a couple books(that probably were never translated to English) and live there for a numberof years. Americans are badly brainwashed too, just like soviets were brainwashed about the USLOL Most old people from Russia say that it was not bad at all(In fact, many of them say it was much better than it is now).

That's probaly why those old people are still around. You can guess what happened to the others who thought differently.

Neil Peart, read his book Ghost Rider Cry he's quite the individual.
Stephen Colbert, he made up the word truthiness and it is now in the Oxford english dictionary. Enough said.

How about Jesus Christ? Even if you don't believe, its hard to deny the impact that was made.

Religious related:

  1. John Paul II: Both as a man and a Pope, fought and helped the liberty cause in Poland and all Soviet Satelite countries than almost anybody else.
  2. John XXIII: A saint, always helped people despite their religious, even helped Jewish people to leave Germany in the War and rebuilt an Orthodox church against the opibnion of Vatican.
  3. Mother Teresa from Calcuta: No words are rquired.

Freedom fighters:

  1. Don José de San Martín: The guy came from Argentina, provided our country of freedom and when he was offered to be the President for life, he rejected it saying his work was to provide freedom, not to create a dictatorship, just the opposite of Bolivar, who came to Perú named himself President for life and divided our country at his will, a dictator IMO.
  2. Lech Wallesa: A freedom fighter
  3. Winston Churchil: Another great man, repaired the mistakes made by other Prime Minister.

Literature:

  1. Jorge Luis Borges: The best writter ever IMO, his stories are incredible.
  2. Mario Vargas Llosa: A great novelist and politician, The War of the End of the World is one of my top books.
  3. Gabriel Gacía Marquez: Despite that i disagree with his political vision, the guy is amazimng.

Sports:

  1. Edson Arantes do Nascimento Pele: The best futbol player ever, the king inside the field and a gentleman outside, some people will vote for Maradona, I will vote for any other player that passes the 1,000 goals and is more than 3 times world champion.
  2. Muhamed Ali: The best Box champion ever.
  3. Nikki Lauda: The bravest sportsman ever, it's veryt hard to return to the cars after the accident he had and even harder to be world champion again.

Music

  1. Peter Gabriel: Prog Rock MVP.
  2. Richard Wagner: He made me love Operas but only German.
  3. Vittorio Nocenzi: The best pianist of Rock IMO.

But over them my mother, when times became rough, she left her home wife life and worked to provide us a career, made me love musoic and literature, always taking care for her sons, still now that my sister and I are adults have problems she's there ready to help.

You have no clue how it is there now. Not very nice. All authority is corrupt, people are mean, there's dog crap all over Moscow after all. Back then ordinary life was better as long as you stayed politically correct: it was cleaner, the police was honest, people were nicer to each othe, you could walk through an urban area after 9 pm without worrying for your life and you could be confident you won't be pulled over because the cop doesn't have enough money for vodka, etc. Yes, he killed many people by sending them to construction sites that no one would volunteer to work on and the country couldn't afford to hire workers so they took the easy way: prosoners. I'm not saying that that was humane or fair it was just the easiest way out of chrisis. It's not similar to the holocaust by any means.

I may not particulary like Stalin, but I certainly do respect him.

Miracle, the corruption was always there, the problem with dicatorial suystems is that they hide their trash so nobody can see it, they are experts in that.

There was always black market, corruption, crimes, etc, probably the vcity was cleaner (Free workers are harder to find in a free country) because Communist Governments are experts in makeup and propaganda.

BTW: According to History Channell, Stalin killed more Jewishs that Hitler (Of course in a much longer term, if Hitler would have had more time, he would have cause at least as much harm and commited more murders), Stalin is credited for 15'000,000 political MURDERS only in  Ukraine and the Kuban steppe!!!!

I would never defend Hitler, he was simply repuslsive criminal, but Stalin was not better, the revenge to the Doctor's Plot was reallńy bloody and most of this doctors were Jewishs.

Some sources talk about 40'000,000 humans killed by Stalin purgues and famines.

I may not particulary like Stalin, but I certainly do respect him.

I can't respect that guy, he was a CRIMINAL.
