VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR — Pawn Hearts
Review by craig4 (craig)
"Pawn Hearts" is a poor crafted, very depressing album, and was lent a copy of this album and though to myself, I give it a spin, heard the album and I was soon gutted, and this sort of music does not appeal to me, but I'm sorry to say this is a negetive album.
"Man-erg" is the opener and the song is rather sloppy and dull, a terrible, monotonous track and the most dissapointing track on the album 0/5!!
"Lemmings" very Pink Floyd-ish at some points and some other reviewer has pointed that out, again not my cup of tea but is a much more sophisticated listen than the previous track, but unfortunately a weak track, 2/5!!, is the strongest offer I can give it!!! "A Plague (of Lighthouse Keepers)" has a fusion of pieces placed together all on one track, very weird track and I do not like all of it infact some parts are to unlistenable especially that out of tune part with the synthesiser going beserk!!! I have to skip search parts of it, alongside some horrible piano thumping, again some pieces are monotonous especially that weird brass section with a train type of sound, the piano ballads nearer to the end is epic-ish but very dull and unnecessary , the guitar part at the end is quite cool with all the fuzzy effects, infact the ending is quite good, with the guitars and symphonic eerie vocals at the end, a poor track but has it's moments 2/5!!
I cannot adapt to this album at all and very much so dislike it. The music is amateurish, too self indulging and monotonus, and very bland!!
This is the first VDGG album I've heard and from now on I shall avoid them at all costs, not my type of music at all!!
5% recommended, 2/5!!!

The thing is, Man-Erg is actually the second track on the album. Lemmings (featuring Cog) is the opener. Nevermind!

There's another one here... I wonder why many people can't give any grounds for a 1-star rating besides that. OLDFIELD, MIKE — Discovery
Review by
Fido73
(Etienne Brousseau)
I found this album on a pile of use vinyl a got for free. I'm glad i didn't pay for it because, there is
nothing good here, except maybe the opener "To France". I listen to that album a couple of time and...
Nope! It's definetly a very low effort by Mike Oldfield. How can a guy who did masterpiece like Hergest
Ridge or Ommadawn, go so low musically ? It's beyond me !

He didn't even get it right; the "guitar part" at the end of "A Plague
of Lighthouse Keepers" was played by Hugh Banton on his organ (a fact
that can be found in "VdGG - The Book" by Phil Smart and Jim
Christopulos).

![2 stars](https://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_images/2stars.gif) I'm probably going to have hate mail or death threats after seeing how much people like this . I had only previously heard the debut just once prior to listening to this at a Dutch friend last night. Holland is like Poland, a néo-prog stronghold just by looking at the sheer number of néo formation. I know this for I work in Holland and as soon as the conversation switches to music : Ayreon , Absent Friends , Plackband , Flamborough Head , Everon (maybe German) , Kayak etc... In the 70's, Holland was a stronghold for jazzy-prog such as Focus , Solution , Finch , Supersister, Cargo and I loved every minute of those bands (well almost). How things change ! Quite a vital prog scene in this country but really , there is space for néo only. This is why a different band like Poetica In Silentio ( yes , they are Dutch) is having such problems finding a public at home. Enough of my whining and complaining. let's get to the reviewing part. This was the second time I had heard this , actually , albeit both only partially, the first time in a record shop as this was a brand new product . Why am I reviewing something that I have not heard in full , you ask? Well because I have enough experience to know where some musical product is headed after a few minutes of listening and fast forwarding inside the tracks and in between them and getting a good look at the booklet. On the plus side , I can tell you that this is a very ambitious project with a sparkling line- up of guests and real neat production and very refined sounds. This conceptual album comes with an extremely well done booklet depicting the story and having all the clichés of a gigantic neo-prog project. Sounds like quite a lot of work , sweat, ardour and passion got sunk or invested into this album. Very impressive! On the down side , as I was listening to this ( I wish I could underline Listening) last night at my dutch friend's house , I tried very firmly to interest myself to the music , but my mind kept wandering away for short breaks as my brains and my friend kept on pointing out the better moments, pulling me back into the musical sphere being developped. So I spents over an hour trying to get into this , also wondering how Osiris of Egyptian mythology could mix in Castle Halls and I was getting into Cosmic Con-Fusion. Needless to say that it was all lost on me. So if you are a neo fan , this is bound to please you , but if you are slightly older and more 70's-driven or into RIO or Canterbury music , you probably knew that that you should stay away. I , for the sake of my friend and my own honesty , had decide to give it another try, but only lasted for some 75 mins. Oh, well!! At least , I tried.

Is it fair to review an album after less than two partial listens? I don't think so. I respect Sean Trane as a reviewer but this time I think he made an inaproppiate review.

I don't think it so much inappropriate as very personal. It is well-written and interesting to read, though of course strongly coloured by his sensation when listening to the album. As he couldn't get into it, he might have listened to the album three hundred times without really being able to concentrate on the music. This is what happens to me when I listen to Dream Theater, so it's something I can relate to very strongly. BTW, PA is full of reviews of the same kind, and many are much worse than that.

I am not complaining about the writing skills of Sean Trane which are very good. I'm only saying that nobody should make a review of an album without listening to it completely several times. Even if the review was written by Shakespeare it would be an inappropiate review. ![Wink](https://www.progarchives.com/forum/smileys/smiley2.gif) If you can't get into the music simply don't review it. Anyway he didn't try it really (come on, he didn't listen to the whole thing even one single time).
Nothing personal.

While I agree with your point of not writing a review after a short listen or two, and certainly almost never do (and if I do, I plainly state it as I did here)
But in this case , I plainly state that I had heard it less than a few times >> I am not trying to make believe I heard 1000 times before writing the review >> I am no masochist ![LOL](https://www.progarchives.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif) and certainly not faking to know the album well enough to say it is bad.
So according to you, it is rather impossible to write a negative review of an album you do not like , unless you heard many times through? ![Confused](https://www.progarchives.com/forum/smileys/smiley5.gif) Mission impossible, if I have to listen to Electric Castle as many times as I did Godbluff or Nursery Crime >> i'd be looking for Lucassen with a bazooka, a riot gun, and two pit bulls to avoid him ever recording anither album >> And you can bet I would solidly disrespectful of Lucassen >> repeated listenings will not make appreciate the album more if you find it downright irritating >> which I avoid to say out of respect for Lucassen. And believe mle, I had plenty of occasion to hear his Ayreon albums before: Actually I cringe at the thought of how many times I heard his stuff over the speakers from a friend or another, at prog concerts etc... I have a solidly good enough idea what his music is like.
when someone, with the experience I have, gets the picture of the kind of album in one listen , I believe it is a safe read.
So you are more likely irritated to read an opinion that goes against your taste, and would like to stop anyone writing a bad review on artistes you like. But then not one single negative review would not get in the Archives, since no-one will ever listen to an album he considers bad enough to write a review the same way he would for a good album.
I have even read a review of Gilmour's latest poor solo album , and the main claims he is writing his review even as he is listening t the album for the first time (two days after the official release),
