I listened to Sex & Religion yesterday night and I asked myself if there is any work by Vai that can be considered prog. Certainly Sex & Religion has some parts not so far from being called "prog", even though the majority of that album is more a mix of hard rock a la Steve Vai and funk/groovy rock, thanks in particular to Bozzio and Stevens's rhythm section. When I first bought this album, the presence of these 2 guys alongside Townside led me think of a massive rocking/proggy album, but I must say I was somehow disappointed.
I mean, with all the potential stored in those 4 musicians, the final result is pretty average, at least for their usual standards.
The other Vai album I own is Passion $ Warfare, and though it is a masterpiece as far as music is concerned, it's hardly a prog album.

So, I ask you if you are aware of more prog albums by Vai & Co.

Sure! try Flex-Able and Flex-Able Leftovers. Or - if these are too experimental for your taste - try his latest album from last year.

To be honest - I can't stand a whole album of Vai ballads. But Call it Sleep is really cool - and one of his most experimental ballads.

I prefer his full albums ... I generally prefer to listen to full albums, not compilations of single songs. I like contrast, diversity ... Fire Garden is a beautiful album, and while I like Hand on Heart, it's not my favorite Vai ballad. I enjoy listening to it, but I enjoy it even more when I know that after that the Fire Garden Suite will be coming up, then Deepness, Little Alligator, Brother ... Big smile

^ surely not coincidence. It's just an idea that he had ... I think it's explained in the booklet of the CD.
