If a ballad is a slow song then my choice is Life On Mars (David Bowie).

And Then Came the  Last Days of May

written by Buck Dharma on Blue Öyster Cult, the live version on On Your Feet or on Your Knees
is even better: more emotion and that monstrous echo sound from Buck´s white Gibson SG!
A truly beautiful song doesn´t need acoustic guitars at all. Sometimes makes me

Come Away Melinda sung by great late David Byron on Very ´eavy.....Very `umble.

Ocean Gypsy sung by Annie Haslam on Scheheraze

No, no. You're reply was very valid, and not showing off at all. And there was information about one of my favorite songs there I didnt know, as well. Keep sharing you're references.

So, I found your mention quite intriguing!Thumbs Up

A fantastic song indeed. A favorite among my favorites. It was on top of the list for that Reason. I also kind of knew it was a choice that could qualify as a ballad in the traditional sense.

Ween - Cold Blows the Wind, is the same song as Gryphon's (among others), 17th. century ballad 'The Unquiet Grave'. I guess people wouldn't expect it from Ween, but its very moving, and Its my preferred version (and their album The Mollusk album is Psychedelic Prog).

Apparently the premise is for these 5 to live in the same house together for a while & record some tunes along the way...Yeah, pretty weird (it's on VH1 I think, only saw a little bit of the premiere episode)...

And Bret Michaels was doing some guest judging duty on another reality show called Nashville Star not too long ago (not really sure of his connection to country music)...

I heard about these shows, yeah.

Elvis, imo, was far far better at ballads in the 60s and 70s. His voice gained a power and emotion that could save almost anything. My favourites are the Motown style 'Only The Strong Survive', the country/folk ballad 'I'm Leavin', the pathos laden 'It's Easy For You'. Some are actually painful to listen to, like 'It's Midnight', 'Hurt', 'My Boy' and his heartbreaking version of 'Unchained Melody' that is by far the best version imo. It's from a TV special he did literally months before his death and he looks in a very bad way indeed, but the vocal is so, so powerful and haunting that despite the enormous physical effort it required to pull it off, it remains a triumphant last hurrah nonetheless.

Thank You - Led Zep

If the sun refused to shine
I would still be loving you
If mountains crumbled to the sea
There would still be you and me

Kind woman, I give you my heart
kind woman, nothing more

Little drops of rain
Whisper of the pain
Tears of love lost in the days gone by
My love is strong
With you there is no wrong
together we shall go until we die

my my my

Inspiration's what you are to me
Inspiration, love you see

And so today, my world, it smiles
Your hand in mine, we walk the miles
Thanks to you, it will be done
For you to me, are the only one

Happiness, no longer sad
Happiness, I'm glad

If the sun refused to shine
I would still be loving you
Mountains crumble to the sea
There would still be you and me

I think that ballad can't exist, since "all time" hasn't passed, and, in fact; it is supposed to be endless; so, you see, my mind is falling appart trying to reach that neverending future and the ballads in it... thanks a lot!

As for me, I'd go with Lucky Man. What other ballad has a killer moog solo at the end?
So much music. So little time.

Rocktopus, I also started wondering about what one would consider a true ballad.
I said Silent Lucidity, but ít is really a song about dream control.

I remember slow dancing to "A Whiter shade of pale" every Friday night at a rock club with this gorgeous blonde...about fifteen years ago...ah sweet memories...
