Topic: Close to the Edge vs TFTO Posted: June 01 2006 at 20:59 |
I'm curious as what you proggers think here. Personally I think Tales is the most complete prog album on earth, but I'm sure there are many who disagree. I think Jon Anderson feels the same way even though Mr Wakeman might not. Over to you.

Close to the egde there is one masterpiece, and tales there are 4 masterpieces.

CTTE has no parts that make me say, "eh". Tales may be a huge achievement but at the end of the day, it doesn't captivate me from beginning to end like CTTE.

Although my love for TFTO is continually growing, I have to place CTTE above it. It was just so well done, and (for lack of a better word) concise. It is also much more accessible. This is a plus, because it makes it easier to show the uninitiated the genius of Yes.

How to explain this... CTTE is a greater album, but I enjoy TFTO more

actually I feel the same way....
maybe you are the same way as I am... you can disconnect your personal
likes and dislikes from appreciation of an album. Genesis's The
Lamb is a perfect example. I don't like the album.... yet
recognize it as Genesis's crown jewel.
as far as the question. No question Close to the Edge is Yes's
crown jewel... but in the end just enjoy listening to TFTO
more. I think it is a more challenging album... musically and
lyrically. That challenge is enough to ward off those who either
don't have enough patience or whatever....however the rate of
return is often proportional to the rate of investment. CttE is
Yes's greatest album as far as those things go... but it's not even in
my top 5 Yes albums for whatever reason... simply that other Yes albums
'grabbed' me and held me tighter than that one did.

Interesting way to look at it. I listen to Tales a whole lot more and enjoy it so much. The YES Album to me is another album I love to listen to as well. I love CTTE but there is something about Tales. I kind of look at it as a treat for us YES fans. Anyway, I look forward to some of the other opinions on this.

The Miracle is correct in a way.. regardless of how we feel about
TFTO.. .it can and has lost people along the way. CttE is the
perfect blend of complex, challenging music... that can connect with al
(or nearly all) prog fans.... and, of course, those who are not prog
fans. It's massive sales being proof of that. I do think TFTO is
a better album.... but at the sake of accessibility...

I love it, what an ironic statement for a lover of progressive rock. I think you summed up the whole "Pop" music industry. Accessibility!! I love Mahler as well and I know he is a handful, or is that a ear full.
It's too bad that those days are gone, fortunatly we have recorded music to listen to.

I am not a great fan of CTTE, but is undeniable that it is very superior to the boring TFTO...

hahah.... is it ironic.. of course it is... not everyone is a fan of
Yes of course. Close to the Edge was Yes in quanitities that most
everyone could handle or even like. TFTO was off course...
OVER the edge hahahha. For those who love certain aspects
of Yes... it is a dream album... for some who don't ... it's a
nightmare. Accessibility is important, for even though we
are all prog fans and open-minded by nature.. .we still are slaves to
our own likes and dislikes.

Actually I heard Tales from Topographic Oceans(and Relayer) before Close to the Edge and after them I was a bit disappointed by CTTE. I still put these albums above CTTE.
37 minutes of great music vs. 81 minutes of sometimes even greater music, the latter wins of course!

I love both albums and whichever comes top we are talking about two of the masterpieces of prog rock and in my opinion music in general.
Yet try as I might I still find it difficult to get through the whole of TFTO without losing interest in the middle sections.
If TFTO was (this may be prog sacrilige) a remixed condensed album it would give CTTE a close fight but as it stands CTTE takes you to heaven sooner.
Mmm.. this may be contentious!!

Close to the Edge. I can understand why Tales is considered a masterpiece, but it's not one of my favourite Yes albums.

Prog doesn't get any better than CTTE.
I give points to Tales for being able to expand such a lofty topic over
a double album and remaining focused enough to have the whole thing gel
as one piece of work.

Umpf!
I´m no wiser after reading this all!
I love ALL of CTTE´s songs, but in TFTO is was just "Ritual Nous Sommes Du Soleil"... Some passages in TFTO were boring, but it´s a masterpiece as well as CTTE. You could ask me, who is better Bill Bruford or Alan White. I would say "in which way better?". So i think this is not a good discussion theme.
TFTO is, in my opinion, softer, and CTTE a real explosion. On both albums Stewen plays very well and White´s drumming very well too. Wakeman´s solo in CTTE (I even saw it on a CTTE concert!) is very ... fast! And overwhelming! With his glitter-cape he looked so majestically... wow! In TFTO I can´t hear Wakeman very often.
That´s why I chose CTTE.
PS: Did ya guys know that during a TFTO concert Wakeman ordered meat at a restaurant and ate (funny that all YES-members are vegetarian) instead of playing his part... Both funny and sad.
