I pretty much only know Italy for the symphonic stuff, which i don't like all that much, but it doesnt mean i have to rule out the entire country..
so recommend bands and give brief descriptions
and... go

Delirium: they only released three albums, between 1971 and 1974. They are listed under the folk-prog sub-genre and have jazzy-influence. It is not completely correct in my humble opinion. With the second album (after the departure of famous singer-songwriter Ivano Fossati) they start to do more complex work: a sort of mix between Jethro Tull, KC and Van Der Graaf, but more naif in the structure.
Their third album "Delirium III: Viaggio negli Arcipelaghi del Tempo" is my favourite and is great!!!
Arti + Mestieri: jazz-rock/fusion (with a little bit of symphonic, to be honest).
Area: jazz-rock/fusion.
Perigeo: same.
Opus Avantra: RIO/ Avant prog.
....et cetera...ANDREW can help!! Edited by Andrea Cortese - May 31 2006 at 13:30 |

I remember loving Delirium when they released their first album - I was 11 years old!
I also remember that, when I bought their first LP, the liner notes mentioned Colosseum and Blood, Sweat & Tears as major influences on the band. However, as Andrea said, it's true their later production was more complex than that, even if they could not easily replace a distinctive vocalist like Ivano Fossati (who is nowadays one of the most influential singers-songwriters on the whole Italian scene). |

All the ones I know of are already mentioned except These four:
A personal favorite is Pierrot Lunaire: Gudrun. Their unique, uneven, avantgardistic, fun, weird, evil, beautiful and mediavelsounding secondalbum. Wonderful vocals by mezzo-soprano Jacqueline Darby. Stream Giovane Madre. Picchio dal Pozzo's debutalbum is canterburyinspired jazz rock. A classic. No streams available. Franco Battiato: Pollution and Sulle Corde di Aries is spacey, electronic and experimental, but with very melodic and catchy songs. Goblin made lots of soundtracks for Dario Argento's horror movies. This album, and the soundtrack to Profondo Rosso are both good. Edited by Rocktopus - June 01 2006 at 00:12 |

Battiato is still a very interesting artist, though nowadays he does rather different things. I saw him live quite a few years ago, when he'd just became a very popular pop artist with songs such as "L'era del cinghiale bianco". I absolutely loved the concert, though I did not really expect to at first. If you are open-minded, you can enjoy even his poppier output, as its quality is very high indeed - though it helps if you understand Italian.
