I can prefer Blackwater Park en Ghost Reveries

Opeth have no 'heavy death metal' passages, and I've certainly not heard any Gothenburg styling in any of their albums (I own them all), unless you are the kind of person who considers any melodic guitar work with harsh vocals Gothenburg.

That said, my favourite is Orchid.  I think those who discovered Opeth from a metal POV would prefer the earlier stuff, but their more recent stuff is proggier, GR was quite a leap. 

Blackwater Park will always be my top favorite.

Ghost reveries. It's got the most refined sound on it. Maybe they did stop "progressing" in a dramatic way very early on, but that's only because the sound they had discovered was very, very good. Ghost Reveries is a natural evolution of that early sound, with better production, more accessible songwriting, superior instrumental skills and musical ideas that are at least equally good, if not better.
