Topic: Preferred OPETH era Posted: May 23 2006 at 11:47 |
My fav era happens just now - OPETH has released their strongest album last year! I also like early era(the first two CDs) much more than 1998-2001 albums(but I adimt that Blackwater Park was the first huge step to progressive-related material). And beginning from Deliverance they have become just flawless!!!

Tough choice, but I picked the progressive era. I really love Damnation from recent years, but from their earlier stuff, Orchid's wicked.

I love all of their albums, but Ghost Reveries is my favorite album by far. Per Wilberg adds many new elements to their sound. It's too bad that Martin Lopez has quit the band.

Amazing that the prog period by a band is running away with the poll on a prog website...

Orchid, Morningrise and My Arms Your Hearse are albums they haven't still come close to in quality, so I voted for early years. I do believe that there are pretty much two eras of Opeth, but whatever.

Progressive era. Much more refined sound, much more variation (espeially in Ghost Reveries) as opposed to just "soft acoustic singing bit / loud heavy growling bit"

Like Ivan I believe that there are only two eras to Opeth's catalogue. I prefer the later. Which is made up of Still Life, Blackwater Park, Deliverence, and Damnation. I don't think you can really say that Ghost Reveries and those albums are all too similar. Ghost Reveries is a much different musical approach and atmosphere as ever tried before, but it certainly is more so a result of their later style.
I see Opeth like this.
Doom Metal- Orchid through My Arms Your Hearse
Progressive Metal- Still Life through Ghost Reveries
I prefer their more progressive period. The song writing really peaked at Still Life and Blackwater Park.

Hello, Prog-Jester. I won't choose, but I have a question. I can see why you call it the early years, but I also think that in those years and all along their career, Opeth havebeen a progressive band, starting from Orchid till Ghost Reveries. You say Years of Development, as if the early years and the middle period are not progressive or something else. I understand the view that they have imporved over the years and I can accept and even support the notion that they have progressed, but I don't agree with labeling their pre-Blackwater Park albums as being non-progressive or belonging to an entirely different sounding Opeth. As Ivansfr0st said, their early albums had quality which is hardly paralleled (in my view) by others and unmistakebly progressiveness in their music which they have perfected and improved during their existence. So I want to know if you really consider them as a metal band that has evolved into a prog - metal band only with BWP? Thanks.

I wouldn't say Opeth were ever Doom Metal, Vince. DM is not a term as wide as Prog-Metal, the borders of which move and more diverse with time(thanks to PMs too partially perhaps). It is much faster than Doom Metal and the atmosphere is different(not neccessarily all atmospheric Metal is Doom either). I am not saying that Doom Metal is by definition a slow genre(although that's one of its common traits, I'm afraid), but the characteristics of DM don't allow Opeth's sound to be a part of it, still.
Assaf, I know that you haven't asked a question to me specifically, but I feel I should express my opinion as well. Early Opeth was, in my opinion, the most emotional, creative and inspired one. Although Mike has improved his clean singing, the new musicians are much more skilled and have more space in the sound of the new group and the music seems more "progressive" and intellectual to the majority, I feel that the old era of Opeth was one of the most powerful musicks in the history of Metal. Every note seemed to have a meaning(which I can't say about their latest material, which in some cases is quite dull) and the music was much more elemental and spontaneous.
The emotion of early Opeth deserves a mention seperately. Some of the greatest personal lyrics have been sung on Morningrise and MAYH("Taaake me awaaaaay!")and I prefer the very moody weak clean vocals and psychotic screaming over a comfortable "professional" approach.

I agree with you on the Doom, I won't repeat you, since you said it well. Orchid is to me, still one of their best efforts (including the amazing, The Apostle In Triumph). Morningrise has Advent and Nektar which are brilliant songs. I hear the difference between those two periods and the first period is not something do look down upon. I don't choose, because I don't have to. I love both periods and that's it. We agree on several metal issues Ivan, and we both love Opeth's early period, so I guess we can be pleased over it, and I agree on some of your points regarding Opeth's early period and it appeals to me as well.

If I have to mention my favourites from the first two albums I will have to mention In Mist She Was Standing, with the greatest intro to a song EVER, Advent with its epic structure and brilliant basswork and the spontaneous To Bid You Farewell, although I love all the early Opeth era and feel that the later material is creative enough, yet too comfortable for me(I don't know why I feel music should make me feel uncomfortable, but it goes foot to foot with my taste for some reasons). Early Opeth just touches me more, and I am glad you say you share my feelings(which I think is more important than having the same opinion, as it means we have both had the effect of the music, which perhaps was its intention!).
I wonder if Opeth disbanded after MAYH, would they be considered for this site's addition? And would the Prog-Metal category, represented here, be as diverse as it is?

I only have albums from Still Life through Ghost Reveries, so it
wouldn't be appropriate for me to comment. However, to my ears
Still Life was the weakest and Ghost Reveries is a masterpiece of
progressive metal (in the interest of being complete, I thought
Damnation and BWP were outstanding and Deliverance was good but
non-essential). Since the earliest one of this period was my
least favorite, it makes me hesitant to go further back in time.
Given my tastes and feelings towards albums from 1999-2005, can anyone
sell me on the earlier output?

I would actually consider Morningrise to be their most progressive album.
My favorite albums by Opeth are Morningrise, Still Life, and Blackwater Park (in chronological order). I don't really think I could pick a favorite era.
