Topic: What do You get from progarchive reviews Posted: May 19 2006 at 16:47 |
Every time I log in I try and read the latest reviews when time
permits. First to see what`s new and second to see other people`s take
on albums. I even like reading reviews that slam albums which I really
like. Sometimes in a review no matter who is writing it something
is brought to my attention about an album which , even though I might
have been listening to for years, I`ve missed or overlooked. Another
aspect I like about reading amatuer reviews here ( by this I mean we`re
not paid to do them ) is that for the most part everyone who writes
reviews here understands some or all aspects of this diverse genre and
are their views to me are more reliable than a review you would find in
Rolling Stone Magazine
Music Hound (which I find not very reliable when it comes to prog) or
the Rough Guide and others. Plus, where else can you get so many
reviews for a single album?
So what `s your take on reviews on progarchives?

The reviews here I find can be very usefull to me when it comes to buying music. Certain reviewres here share a similer taste in music to me and they write concise, well thought out reviews that show the good and bad points of an album. As you said its also nice to see how some people view an album that I like/dislike just to see what others think.

They are very helpful. I enjoy comparing opinions and different points of view. With such quantity and, in general, quality of reviews of the same album, you get a very accurate vision of how an album is like.

I like it. For me a help to get to know unknown bands. I don't like reviewers who give high ratings just because they like the bands. One of the best reviews I read was one about Magma, I almost could hear the music while reading it.

You can get somewhat of a feel for albums, and usually more easily compare albums. But it's awfully difficult to get an accurate description of any album when one reviewer praises it, and the next one slams it.

That was kind of what happened to me when I was reading the Harmonium's 5 saisons. Every review was praising the album and saying how beautiful it is ect.ect. It also happened with the Godspeed reviews too.

Luckily, there's a good amount of unbiased, well-thought-out reviews so one can get a better idea of what albums could possibly lead them down new musical paths, or which paths aren't exactly for them. As for the lesser reviews, I'm not exactly one to talk, my first two or three are terrible... Once I even absentmindedly wrote "King Crimson" when I really wanted to write "The Moody Blues"!

I find the reviews extremely informative. The main reason for this is that it points me in directions I would otherwise not have considered. I've been a fan of 'prog' related music since the early 80's, with Jethro Tull being my introduction (I still remember being derided by fans of Adam And The Ants etc at the time).
I went through the mid 80's neo-prog wave with Marillion being one of the flag bearers, whilst also getting into Genesis, Camel, Rush, Floyd, Eloy, Yes, Tangerine Dream etc en route.
Then there were the 'wilderness years' when I kind of gave up on music, partly out of disillusionment with the common fare that was masquerading as music, and partly out of ignorance, and just not keeping in touch with what was going on.
Not ashamed to say that this website has rekindled my interest in music, the right kind of music, and brought me into contact with a wealth of music I never knew existed, and would never have stumbled upon had it not been for the Prog Archives.
For example, new bands I've come to like (love?) in the last 18 months include Van Der Graaf Generator (how did I miss them out all this time - I remember them only because Theme One used to be played by Tommy Vance as a bit of link music on The Friday Rock Show when I was at school (they also used a Dixie Dregs snippet too I think)), Dream Theater (Scenes From A Memory is fantastic), Caravan (9 Feet Underground is just crazy), Opeth, Riverside, Anglagard, Anekdoten, Wobbler, Mannfred Mann's ASolar Power (I only previously had Budapest Live), Tool, Ayreon (and from this, the delightful Heather Findlay & Mostly Autumn), the fantastic Discipline, a lot of King Crimson I hadn't previuosly been into (Starless etc - how good is that?!?), just getting into Italian Prog scene, discovered Porcupine Tree, rediscovered IQ (Harvest of Souls is brilliant), starting to look at post experimental, like Kayo Dot, Don Caballero etc.
Prog Archives has definitely been the window into the prog world that has allowed me to get back into music and discover great music I would otherwise have been ignorant of, and for that, I can only be very gratefull !!

Since I have found this site, I have used the reviews as well as other tools to purchase over 100 progressive cds. There have only been about 5 cds that I do not particularly care for. I think that you can conclude that the reviews are a pretty good tool.

There are definitely some reviews that are great for entertainment value, but I find most to be be very informative. It also helps that there are multiple reviews, and reviewers. Other sources usually only have a few people on staff, and only one entry per subject. That doesn't help if the particular critic just doesn't like the band, or genre.
I also enjoy the forums, and I don't really like this type (no pun intended) of communication. You just don't run into many prog fans in everyday life. When I am with my friends questions like, "Which is your favorite icarnation of King Crimson?" don't usually come up.

I agree. I think some people are set in their ways and biased for or against certain bands or sub-genres. An ideal album review (IMO) should take a neutral, objective stance and give an accurate, fair and unbiased assesment of the music without letting personal opinion overshadow the description of the music.
But on the other hand, I do respect everyones opinion on here, whether I agree with it or not. And overall I really enjoy reading the reviews. Ive discovered some great music I probably would have never heard of so Im really grateful for sites like this one.

I like to read reviews on a variety of genres, eventually finding a reviewer I tend to agree with. and luckily Mr. Trane is infamously prolific and usually a joy to read.

I'd say the reviewer that I'd agree with on most matters is Easy Livin' (bar Soft Machine Third and Amon Duul II's Yeti, it seems- can't wait until I review those classics) but also I always hugely enjoy Dick Heath, Trotsky and Sean Trane's, even if I don't always quite agree with the latter on the odd band!
There are some top notch reviewers here, no question. This is my first port of call for all matters prog, and more often than not my only port of call.

...yes Bob!
I have found that most of the reviews on PA to be extremely informative and well written, and are a priceless guide to albums and bands we know little about but would like to know more - though some are too long and could say much more using fewer words ( the art of good writing ) and some are so short they tell you nothing. PA has the most prolific music review sections of any music site i have seen, even to the point, in some cases, of some albums having hundreds of reviews (CTTE has nearly 500, and SEBTP has over 400), not sure if that's good or bad really, though it pushes the ratings up - many reviewers give out 5 star ratings like smarties!!
I always try and look for the albums with the least entries of music i like, i could not write a review of music i wasn't into, or something i knew nothing about, i couldn't do a Camel, Giant, Caravan or VDGG album for instance as i don't really like them and it would result in a biased view, though if one of my favourite groups produced a duff album i would be the first to criticise it, and it would come from a balanced viewpoint as i would know their history and what they're capable of.
