Ivan Melgar M: Very good point.  I'm in agreement with your Hackett assessment.

Fezman: I quickly perused the official Dream Theater (darn I almost spelled it Theatre) website at http://www.dreamtheater.net/ but did not find the pertinent section.  Does this require registration to view?  Am I at the right site and missed it? Sorry for being obtuse, but could you provide a link?  That sounds really extreme!

Mongo: Yes, the Rush fans I know, and they are legion (well, a fairly small legion cause I don't personally know THAT many), are very diehard indeed, and have kept their strong faith for mnay many years despite, what I think to be, a number of mediocre releases.

I was an uberRush fan at one point, but now I'm more of an admirer who loves several of their earlier albums.

Actually as far as the internet goes I would say Gentle Giant fans. They take criticism of their favourite band very poorly like you must be some sort of retard for not appreciating the importance of GG in the grand scheme of things.

Glad I got that of my chest!

Clap Fortunately not all of them behave this way, as my recent thread suggests.

Oh, and BTW - I love Gentle Giant, always have and most probably always willTongue.

mmmmmm..... the most obvious one that springs to my mind, is the rabid fan debates after the parting of Fish and Marillion.
Boy they get really catty.

On his tour last year Fish got a throat infection and had to cancel a show and the fighting/flaming/war that broke out between the Fish fans and the Marillion fans (who were crowing that he was rubbish and passed it for cancelling a gig) was shocking! I was amazed....... it was inpossible to sit on the fence, to still like some Fish and some Marillion......they wanted blood!
Both sides were just as bad, and both sides felt they were above it all......
Yup, both side win this hands down!

.....(wearng a disguise so I don't get beaten up when I return to the Fish forum!!!)

if you criticise someone's house they'll say, yeah, it needs some work on it, but it's home, and the same about their car, it gets me there.
if you say their wife is ugly they'll say, yeah she is, but she loves me.
if you say their kids are weird they'll say yeah they sure are!
if you say their dog is stupid they'll say yup, sure is!
but if you criticise anybody's taste in music.....
WATCH OUT!!!!! YOU GOT BIG TROUBLE!!Angry

but to answer the question directly, there are too many sacred cows on PA, especially some  mentioned above!!! ....what happened to intelligent debate instead of  " **** sucks!" ???

On this forum, Dream Theater fans are probably the most fanatical.

ELP used to have their share of rabid fanboys/girls but they seem to have been rather quiet of late.

I haven't noticed too many Tool fanatics getting overheated here, although some of the reviews of 10,000 days are a tad unbalanced. Nothing like SFAMM II or Octavarium though.

Marillion fans are the stuff of legend, but again I haven't noticed many on here - presumably they've got their own forum to clutter up.
'Like so many of you
I've got my doubts about how much to contribute
to the already rich among us...'

I only remember two or three DT fanatics on this forum, and they didn't last long... Valarius is absolutely nuts about DT, but he's hardly a fanatic - although he defends DT ardently, I have never seen him flame anyone in the process...

seconded, although I love my friends who happen to be Marillion fans, as well as I am. But they surely are fanatical, that's right Wink

I think DT fans are pretty crazy but i think its a natural reaction. Alot of people bash DT alot, and since they are a relativly known band alot of people also hate them. I know from experience since i started listening to prog, DT was one of my first bands, i heard alot of comments on their music so naturally i stood up for what i like.

I noticed that fans of metal are generally more aggressive and arrogant. Same could be due to the nature of music they are listening to, or....  ??

I think a lot of Yes fans are voting for Dream TheaterLOL
Maybe it boils down to the old school against the new school (and vice versa)

Well, I guess I'm the outcast of that crew, because I listen to my share of metal and I have self esteem problems! Thumbs Up *miiixed messages!!* Also, Dream Theater is one of my fav bands *along w/ Pink Floyd and Rush* but I'll definitely admit they have their flaws. But hey, if music was perfect, the industry'd have died a long time ago

I would say Dream Theater fans. Being an ex- radical/fanatical fan of the band myself though they are still one of my fav bands. The problem is that the fanatical obsession was passed from friend to friend and most of them now that listen DT I give them another prog band and they'll say: "Its good, but its not Mike Portnoy or Petrucci or Rudess or Myung or LaBrie"

Dream Theater fans.

They are younger and are therefore less able to manage their passions and emotions for their heroes. I was the same about Rush when I was 15 and would brutally attack anyone who criticised them. Either that or I would run away crying if they were bigger than me, which they usually were.

Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!
