I don't visit the home page very often, but a few moments ago I did and came across the following reviews:
CAMEL Breathless
Review by postfan I really love Camel and I've got almost every album they've made. Unfortunately ther's some weaker albums too: The Snow Goose and Nude are weak for they are so boring, but this is something extraordinary! Breathless is just so bad it really pisses me off. I get really angry when I try to listen it, how could they manage to create something like this. I really cannot listen to it for a proper review, sorry. 1 star. Posted Friday, May 12, 2006, 01:47 EST | Permanent link CAMEL Nude
Review by postfan This is another Boring album from Camel. I tried several times to listen it through, but there's nothing to clutch. So I finally gave up. This is not prog. Prog is never so boring. Only one exception, I recall, Drafted. 2 points for that. Posted Friday, May 12, 2006, 01:36 EST | Permanent link From what I've read so far in this thread, I think both these reviews would qualify as inappropriate. He (or she) doesn't really say anything about the albums, except that they are bad and boring - and in the first one he even says that he can't listen to it properly. This is not what reviews should be like, I'm afraid. What do you think about it?

Hi Rafaella,
As much as I think these reviews are rather poor in lenght and in argumentation, I sort of agree with what he says about the albums he mentions. But I can remember also my early reviews not being much superior this these. So I would not cast stones at him, just yet
I expect that he will also send poor reviews about raindances and ICSYHFH and single Factor >> let's face it Camel was not putting out good record (and he does rate Nude better than Breathless) during that era

OK, let's not cast any stones at him... BTW, I was not criticising the content (I've yet to review "Breathless", but I would not give it more than 2 stars, in spite of Richard Sinclair being there), but rather the way he says the albums are c**p without at least explaining why. This is the way I think a review should be written. Otherwise, those who are interested in learning more about a given album would not get a proper idea of what to expect. Anyone can write a dismissive review and say "it's awful" - it's much more difficult to explain why.
Just my two cents...

I agree with either...
First reviews are generally poor but PA "veteran" reviewers are improving more and more and requiring a similar standard from PA "rookies". It may be unfair but new reviewers have now hundreds or thousands of fine reviews to use as a starting-point.
In the other side some albums deserve no more than a dozen lines but the ability to write little and say enough is reserved to a few gifted people, like Hughes or Raffaella, for instance.
Conclusion: great chance that both reviews be removed.

Atkin; as much as I'd like to agree with you about Hughes; I'm gonna disagree. He doesn't review; he drones. And says nothing; at least nothing descriptive.

Jeez, Shane... I drone a lot when reviewing! But in different scales we all need sometimes to "fill the sausage" (Brazilian expression badly translated by me into English ).

I suspect "filling the sausage" is waffling. It's probably a reference to the non-meat ingredients of a sausage. i.e. padding out a review to make it a bit more substantial.

HAWKWIND Anthology 1967-1982
Review by thomascourtois First review of this album
A good compilation for beginners, though the songs are from very various sources, with
differences in the sound. Typically, this double album gets you to find another (and so
better) hawkwind original recordings. no. |

this analogy exists in french also.
Let's give the man a chace (I am biased though because I happen to agree with him, which apparently Shane does not)

RUSH 2112
Review by BBallBoy07
This Album is great. Geddy Lee's High pitched voice and fast chords, Alex lifeson and his
amazing solos, and niel peart,WHO IS the best drummer who ever lived. when all these
amazing musicians come together, the music they make is superb. Even in concert, there
music has the exact same quality as in studio. 2112 is the best song ever. I have never
heard a more skilfull song played. given that the album has 146 reviews at active,I demand more. |

Well this review will be coming in 147th place (at best) , so there is not much chance it will be read , and if you have not found better reviews in the 146 previous one , maybe we should stay away from the album
I would not really worry about such reviews about an already well-reviewed album

YES Close to the Edge
Review by bambinfou I have to admit I stopped liking this album after 2-3 listens and I must admit that, in my opinion, it's really overrated, that's why i give it only 1 star. There are many Yes albums much better than Close to the Edge, even if I think that Yes is overrated. Try Pink Floyd, Genesis, Supertramp, Dream theater or King Crimson for solid progressive rock music that really rocks ! Posted Saturday, May 13, 2006, 17:14 EST | Permanent link |

Probably just three reviews of the same album from the same person... NEW TROLLS New Trolls '70Review by oms.salvadorIt is not a progressive album, but one collection of published songs on 45 turns. But it is the beautifulst album, because us extension all the technique for which are famous the New Trolls. Therefore, if in music tried feeling and excellent technique this is that ago for you. Useless to describe a song instead of an other because they are the all beautifulst ones. It listens to you and then you say to me. Posted Wednesday, September 01, 2004, 16:19 EST | Permanent link NEW TROLLS New Trolls '70Review by AndreaSalvadorThis is one of the many collections of the New Trolls, important because it is the first and because it collects all 45 lap escapes in those years and not comprised in the first LP. The great music, enormous technique and 0 Profressive ones. But it is a great album, that council to all the lovers of the period of transition towards Adult Progressive. CAIRO Cairo
Review by drain-o (Jacques Brenier) I remember to obtain this when I saw the parts and the songs on the back of an album of homage for the side in black of the moon was which about what Magna Carta was all. I cannot remember if I like which Cairo made, but I guess that I must have liked it because then I went to buy this album of Cairo which they called after themselves. They are not Egypt or Sudan, but I think that they are the United States. And, in all honesty, my first opinion of Hugues' reviews stands, especially when reviews such as this are taken into account.
YES YesReview by Sean Trane (Hugues Chantraine)SPECIAL COLLABORATOR Prog-Folk Specialist Ambitious psych or proto prog that should not be too highly regarded as this is their first one and they will get much better. A good thing to do is to invest into Yesterday as the best tracks from this one and the following one are gathered into one good compilation. Really!, the most interesting numbers have been picked up one that good compilation. Well...so what if "they will get much better". Why "should it not be too highly regarded"? Is that really fair? To say nothing of the review itself, which says, well, NOTHING about the record. And please, Hugues..."We" don't all think alike (your reviews of Rush's 2112 and Hemispheres). Speak for yourself. Ugh.

ZAPPA, FRANK Hot Rats
Review by Akebono (Oscar) Ok: there are a couple of songs I don΄t like that much BUT Son of Mr Green Genes and Willy the Pimp have some guitar solos that are out of this world. I have never heared anything like them played by another guitar player, EVER...! Rather short isn't it. He doesn't likes a couple of songs and still he rates 5 stars ?? |
