Opeth aren't Death Metal. Not even on Orchid ... and certainly not on the newer albums. In my book they're an oddity somewhere between Symphonic Prog Metal and Post Metal. If it wasn't for the growling and the heavy use of double bass drum rhythms, I'm sure that nobody would even think of putting them anywhere near Death or Kreator.

In most part I agree with you Tristan. Bands like Anathema or Pain Of Salvation remain as unmatched in their emotional approaches. I also agree that Dream Theater are very technical, and show off almost all of the time, but that there's NO emotion in their music is simply wrong and I (and believe me, many others as well) disapprove with you oppinion. DT have several emotional parts in their music, which can't be overheard. Maybe those moments do not appeal to you for youself, but if you listen very openly to some of their more mellow songs, like the bluesy ballad Through Her Eyes (what a sad one, get's me almost allways I listen it in flue of the Scene From A Memory album) you will find out, that they also can write some really heart-wrenching and emotional tunes if they want. Find it out for yourself! If you have tried and it hasn't succeeded, alright. Than their try of emotional attribution fails to touch you. Or you are one of those listeners, who finds DT sounds generally "cheesy" in such moments, like many others do.
I meant no emotional relation with the music and me personally Wink

edit: I do not think DT sounds cheasy when they're performing ballads. In fact, I think of those songs most of the time as nice interludes between the heavy stuff.

I own all DT albums with LaBrie on vocals and do like their music, but not on an emotional level as said before Wink (i have listened to Train of Thought the most I guess... which is like the most un-emotional album they have LOL)

Well, that lies in the ears of the beholder. Wink
ToT is emotional - it sounds so angry at times, almost like St. Anger! LOL

Well, since they're not included here, I just thought I should say this: listen to Threshold. They are very likely to satisfy the tastes of those already used to metal in general (or prog metal in particular), as well as those who find it difficult to digest some of the bands featured in this poll. I believe they have a wonderful way of conveying emotions in their music, and they are top class players, without ever becoming excessive in showing off their skills. Great and truly unique band.

I voted Dream Theater, but Symphony X and Tool were close seconds.

I can't believe Fates Warning has only 2 votes (mine included).

They pretty much pioneered the genre during the mid 80s.

I voted Ayreon out of these.  When I found out Arjen L. can't even read sheet music but can come up with the stuff he does,  Wow.  Maybe that is commonplace with today's musicians but seems incredible to me.  However, my favorite is Henning Pauly with Chain and Frameshift.  Chain.exe is my favorite prog metal album

WHAT!!!

Sorry man but Opeth are not Symphonic Prog. And defining death metal with two bands like death or kreator(who are thrash by the way) does not cover the genre at all.

YES Opeth are Progressive Metal but they are also melodic Death Metal.

And please anyone calling Opeth not progressive just listen to Blackwater Park and tell me they're not.

To me I hate the subcategory system anyway but i thought id try to set that straight

Correct.

The answer to the question posed in this thread is Maudlin of the Well (with Opeth as a close second).

Opeth aren't really a Melodic Death Metal group, although they do play Death Metal with melodic parts. If that makes no sense, then imagine calling Venom Progressive Metal because they played Metal and progressed the genre, influencing a huge number of groups.

The genre names are not supposed to make sense.

Because Psychotic Waltz is not on the list I have to decide between Fates Warning and Pain of Salvation with honourable mention to Anathema.

Pain of Salvation wins but very narrowly.

Mmm...I can't find Threshold in that list!
That said, my vote must then go to Dream Theater
