Meshuggah. "Chaosphere", "Catch-33", and "I" are three of the landmark recordings of truly progressive metal, but no one will ever admit that."I" buries the majority of Dream Theater's catalog without even trying, and it's just one 21-minute song. |

First: Great poll! Second: A hell of a tough one! Third: For which band in hell should I decide?
Thinking, thinking, thinking...
Choice:
I've just discovered Pain Of Salvation. What a pretty prog metal outfit they are! I just can't get enough of The Perfect Element and Remedy Lane recently. Daniel Gildenlöw is already my favourite singer in progressive metal. What an incredible diverse range he has! Just need their other albums too. I've always liked Dream Theater, Fates Warning, Queensryche and almost all the other bands mentioned above but the problem is that I've listened to them too much over the years or their style isn't really my cup of tea (Meshuggah, sometimes Tool). At the moment there is no competition for the emotive, creative Swedish duo Pain Of Salvation and Opeth. Since the style of Pain Of Salvaton appeals a bit more for myself, I go with 'em. That can change any other day by the way! This is just a moment-decision.
P.s.: Kamelot and Evergrey aren't really prog, they are power metal bands wich prog relations. But that doesn't mean that they are misplaced on list.
Savatage is my favourite band from the whole poll, but since the question is what is the best "prog metal band" they need to get excluded for the competition.
That was really a tough one though!

In most part I agree with you Tristan. Bands like Anathema or Pain Of Salvation remain as unmatched in their emotional approaches. I also agree that Dream Theater are very technical, and show off almost all of the time, but that there's NO emotion in their music is simply wrong and I (and believe me, many others as well) disapprove with you oppinion. DT have several emotional parts in their music, which can't be overheard. Maybe those moments do not appeal to you for youself, but if you listen very openly to some of their more mellow songs, like the bluesy ballad Through Her Eyes (what a sad one, get's me almost allways I listen it in flue of the Scene From A Memory album) you will find out, that they also can write some really heart-wrenching and emotional tunes if they want. Find it out for yourself! If you have tried and it hasn't succeeded, alright. Than their try of emotional attribution fails to touch you. Or you are one of those listeners, who finds DT sounds generally "cheesy" in such moments, like many others do.

My vote goes for SHADOW GALLERY, they are incredible. In my second place is SAVATAGE which is by any means a legendary band....

I voted Dream Theatre, because i can't say I've heard much from the others. I have heard that Tool, Ayeron, Opeth and Anathema are cracking bands though, and will be checking them out soon. Any good starting points for them?

I don't have anything by Anathema, but try the following starters: "The Human Equation" by Ayreon, "Lateralus" by Tool, and "Blackwater Park" by Opeth. ![]() |

A vote for Meshuggah because they're actually challenging to listen to. The rest are too pleasant for my liking.

ill advise on opeth cause im not a big fan of tool or anathema
I'd say to start with their newest album Ghost Reveries
Although Blackwater Park is very close behind
Which side do you like light or dark?

I will say that Dream Theater is one of my favorites because if not for them i wouldn't have discovered proggressive music so that definitely changed my entire view on music. However that doesn't mean that i don't like the other prog metal bands cause they are awesome but i'm not a big fan of Meshuggah, Therion, Devin Townsend, and Anathema. Don't know why they just never appealed to me

From this list I have not heard Meshuggah and Anathema, but guess either of them is not better than Pain of Salvation - hence my vote for PoS.
Second place goes to Mekong Delta (Visions Fugitive)
Third to Cirith Ungol (any album)
Fourth to Trouble (Run To the Light)
Fifth to Fates Warning (upto Perfect Symmetry)
Sixth to Manilla Road (Deluge)
Seventh to Indukti
etc
etc
etc............

Riverside. I like Opeth a tiny little bit more, but they're melodic death metal rather than prog metal.

I'm not a big fan of heavy prog metal.
Riverside (are they really Prog-Metal? I'd class them as Art Rock meself),POS and Opeth (recent) are the only bands I can listen too. |
