Psychedelic/Space Rock (Studio Album, 2004) Avg: 3.57/5 from 3 ratings PINK FLOYD — The Complete Zabriskie Point SessionsReview by ResidentAlien
THIS IS NOT AN OFFICIAL RECORDING. This is a bootleg--the only way to obtain it is through downloading or sharing. That said, I see no reason for it to be included here.
For bootleg collectors, though, it's a good compilation to seek out. The quality is mostly pretty high as it was all recorded professionally for The Zabriskie Point soundtrack. Some of the outtakes are pretty bizarre, but mostly there's little here for the average Floyd listener. Stick with the official soundtrack unless you're into collecting everything Pink Floyd ever touched.

Eh, correct me if I'm wrong about this - I thought reviews on bootlegs weren't allowed here on PA???
As the reviewer noted himself: "I see no reason for it to be included here", but I recon he made a mistake here ![Big smile](smileys/smiley4.gif)
Anyway I fully agree with him.

Ah, I just wondered on this case, regarding the fact that there are already three reviews for this bootleg album. Thanks for clearing up this matter.
So, it's NO BOOTLEGS here, I conclude.

The issue related to BOOTLEGS is a bit complicated, Karin.
There are the real bootlegs, ie pirate copies, generally live and with bad recording quality. But there are the official bootlegs (sic) sometimes released by the band themselves (for contractual reasons) or adopted by the band (for several other reasons).
Here in PA each case is evaluated individually (obviously the piracy isn't tolerated) and if something wrong is discovered the proper measures will be taken, no matter if 1 or 100 reviews were made.
Thanks again! ![Wink](smileys/smiley2.gif)

Many people seem to get very confused about this. I often find people talking about one when actually meaning the other. Though I accept there is a certain amount of crossover, they are essentially two different things: BOOTLEGS are unauthorised recordings, usually of live performances but not always. As you say, sometimes bands adopt a bootleg and issue it as an authorised release, but mostly they are issued privately (commonly now by bit torrent downloads). Bootlegs are a bit of a minefield morally and legally (can a live performance be copyrighted?), but as far as PA is concerned it would be nice to include them, but totally impractical as they would swamp the database (there are several hundred just of Pink Floyd!). PIRATE COPIES are unauthorised/unlicensed copies of official releases which purport to be the real thing in order to defraud (BIG problem in Africa and Asia) (also a big problem in the software industry - I used to deal with this in a previous job). The problem here is that people often do not perceive it as theft, presumably because it is so easy to do. Regards

Spot on, Joolz... I tried to focus in the bootlegs (official and unofficial) and mixed with the pirate copies (really a theft). Your explanation is great and I thank you!

DIR EN GREY — VULGAR
Review by
enginesofhate
(who knows)
This CD was a surprise when I first heard it. There is absolutely nothing progressive, or
noteworthy as music, about this, unless piss poor nu-metal instrumentation sung in
Japanese is groundbreaking.
Posted Tuesday, May 09, 2006, 09:16 EST | Permanent link I don't know the band and I don't know the CD, but I think this "review" doesn't meet any standards, let alone those of the Progarchives.

![4 stars](https://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_images/4stars.gif) A magnificent work. I have worn out my cassette and no longer have this music. It was the only music to listen to when driving on the west coast of the South Island. In the dark, watching out for the possums on the road. If anybody knows where I can get a CD, I want 2- 1 for me and 1 for my best mate.

PINK FLOYD — The Delicate Sound of ThunderReview by denisguriev
How can anybody say it's one of Pink Floyd's best albums?! I heard just one song of it- "Learning to Fly"-OH MY GOD! Even I could play it better. I have all of Pink Floyd, except for that album. Even though it's brilliantly planned, the band should review how to play instruments and sing. Personally, I judge the music itself, no matter how complicated it is or how it's planned out. Plus, the only worthy Pink Floyd album after Roger left is "A Momentary Lapse Of Reason". Pink Floyd is only Floyd without Waters.

IMO reviews based on the listening of one song should be erased. The guy didn't have the album and he only had listened to "Learning to fly"!

I hate to beat a dead horse, but this "review" is totally unintelligible.
MORSE BAND, STEVE — Prime CutsReview by MANDRAKEROOT (Andrea Salvador)
— First review of this album —
A GENIUS TO THE SERVICE OF THE PROG
I had the luck to see Steve Morse in action during the tour of "Purpendicular" with the Purple (P.s.: large album) and i should admit that is a large musician. To level of guitarists it is one of my favorites. Said this "Prime Cuts" is more of a compilation.
"Heightened Awareness" (from "Split Decision") is pure Prog Metal, a mixed between Raimbow, Deep Purple and Modern Power Metal. An immortal piece. More Jazz "Prognosis" (from "Major Impacts") where Steve Morse it is surpassed. Nevertheless also Van Romaine is superlative to the drum, showing to be one of the better drummer in the world! "La Villa Strangiato" (from "Working Man [Tribute To Rush]") is alredy a mess in the original version. And here? it is a very mess! To imitate Alex Lifeson 4 guitarists are wanted us (Morse, Allman, Murphy and Towson) and the magic is alone grazed. Nevertheless Portnoy and Sheehan suppot well the four and the song seems a game. "The Clap" (from "Tales From Yesterday [Tribute To Yes]") not in possession the magic than Steve Howe ad created. Nevertheless the passage from Steve to another Steve... It does not hear itself (except for that Morse it seems to build of more the passages giving back the piece a song almost country, but are sterile details). "Quantum Soup" (from "Feeding The Wheel" of Jordan Rudess) is more Prog Metal with long Swing and Jazz Rock parts dominating from the keyboards where the ours plays alone the solos, very exciting. Interesting piece wery technical and cold (but actual for this charmed). "Busybodies" (from "Split Decision") is Symphonic Prog, thanks to the guitar partiture, technique and warm (is Classic Music!). "Led On" (From "Sonic Residue From Vapourspace") is a nice remix built from Mark Gage (like for the series "Prime Cuts" the Magna Carta created the series "Vapourspace Remix"). Nice and nothing more. "Air On A 6 String" (from "Major Impacts 2") is Baroque Music. It closes "Wooden Music" (from "Major Impacts 2") is a piece to the Yes, very attractive and guide to close a compilation like this.
Not a simple compilation to present Steve Morse, but a large album. To the posterity the difficult sentence. For always yours, Mandrakeroot.
This one doesn't either.
ANGE — Au-delà du Délire Review by braindamage
The third work released in 1974 "Au-dela du delire". Feature sublime vocal of Christian Decamps, and dark, symphonic rock. It is a work to which initial ANGE a style is established. The ensemble with a profound, doubtful keyboard and guitar is dark, and wonderful. Especially, there is overwhelming power. Poor tone quality might be intentional. Moreover, I felt deep artistry that seemed to be France in classical play of wind and stringed instruments, a cembalo, and an acoustic guitar. Work that equals JETHRO TULL in entertainment. The melody is more wonderful. The melody of "Les longues nuits d'isaac" and "Ballade pour une orgie" is indeed unforgettable. It is advanced, symphonic rock that equals initial GENESIS and KING CRIMSON. It is a fairy tale rather than the concept album. It is a picture book for adults written in French. It is a masterpiece.
Highly recommended.

CRIMSON GLORY — TranscendenceReview by marc-baum
A perfect Progressive Power Metal Masterpiece!
That could be enough but finally isn't, when it comes to describe that jewel, the second record by Crimson Glory and a milestone in metal history, that influenced many copists and young metal bands. The debut album was great too, but "Transcendence" is without doubt CG's highlight. The production is perfect, glass clear and powerful (what a band sound!), you even can hear all instruments perfectly, the songwriting in epics like "Painted Skies" (what a melody!), "In Dark Places" (lyrically the best they ever did), the unbelievable intensive ballads "Lonely" (never heard a song like this, purely beautiful!) and the title track or the atmospheric "Burning Bridges". "Transcendence" came out in the same year as Queensryche's masterpiece "Operation: Mindcrime" (1988), which are from both bands the absolutely career-highlights. Crimson Glory is a band with grateful musicians, but the leadsinger Midnight stands out with his unreached high steel-voice and set the formidable songs the crown up on head. "Transcendence" shines from start to finish as one of the best metal releases in the late 80's and all times. If you like intelligent metal music, no way leads around this all-time classic, which still sounds as fresh and great as it came out! There is no weak or average track to find, believe me, this is pure perfection! The band never reached this level again, they completely lost ground with "Strange And Beautiful" and never came back where they once belonged. The first album and especially "Transcendence" are mentioned as the band's classics and are essential for fans of Queensryche and US-metal. This is as fine as metal gets!

CRIMSON GLORY — TranscendenceReview by Marc Baum (Marc Baum) PROG REVIEWER
Crimson Glory are one of the most influential bands in both power and progressive metal circles, and after listening to Transcendence, I am in awe of why this band did not make it big. This album is probably the benchmark by which all albums in the progressive power metal genre are judged, as this album delivers in every way, from start to finish. Transcendence is one of those albums that come along once in a lifetime, the type of album that influences a whole genre of music, as bands like Conception and Kamelot have been very influenced by this style of music. Even this album came out in the same year as Queensryche's "Operation: Mindcrime", it can rival with the high quality of this concept piece, if not top it at times.
Basically, the music of Crimson Glory is a cross of the vocal work and rhythm of bands like Queensryche and the instrumental precision of Sanctuary. So what we have here is a power and progressive metal hybrid, although there are not a lot of time changes and classical influence. You won't really find any keyboard work here, but you will find some of the vocal stylings commonly associated with progressive metal, and much of the music found here is in the style of Rage For Order Queensryche and Refuge Denied Sanctuary, especially vocally. Midnight sounds like a cross of Geoff Tate and Warrel Dane (when he was in Sanctuary and prior to Nevermore.) So, in other words, expect great vocal work here. Also expect to find razor-sharp production and guitar work, but don't expect to find a lot of thrash-style drumming. The drumming is very good, but you're not going to hear a lot of double-bass drumming and triple-time blast beats.
01 - Lady Of Winter: This is the first song here, and it features a nice flow, with high- pitched Midnight vocals. How does he hit those notes without rupturing his vocal cords? The guitar playing is very good, as the production of the album shows how etched and refined the riffs are. (Track rating: 9/10 points)
02 - Red Sharks: It is the heaviest song on the record and lyrically deals with Communism and the Soviet Union, as suggested by the song title. This is one of those songs that is almost impossible to not headbang to. The intro riffs are good, and the drumming is rhythmic, but very steady and strong. (Track rating: 9/10 points)
03 - Painted Skies: That piece is an excellent ballad, with an excellent vocal performance from Midnight, making me wonder how his vocal cords hold up. It contains one of the most haunting and memorable refrains I ever heard, extremely beautiful and deep! (Track rating: 9.5/10 points)
04 - Masque Of The Red Death: Has almost a thrashy rhythm to it, and falsetto is the norm for the vocals once again here. (Track rating: 8.5/10 points)
05 - In Dark Places: One of the absolute best songs on the disc is "In Dark Places", which features excellent riffing, and a very driving and to-the-point flow. Once again the riffs are very etched and refined here, and the drumming performance is very steady and strong. And man, the vocals! Midnight is probably one of the top vocalists in heavy metal history, and he shows why here. The lyrics of "In Dark Places" are also top-quality. A masterpiece in it's own right! (Track rating: 10/10 points)
06 - Where Dragons Rule: It is another top-quality vocal performance from Midnight, and the riffs are once again, crystal clear. (Track rating: (8.5/10 points)
07 - Lonely: One of the best uptempo-ballads in metal history! The guitar work is stunning and the vocals of Midnight here give the song it's important character. I only can highly recommend to download it here free on the archives! (Track rating: 9.5/10 points)
08 - Burning Bridges: We finally reached the absolutely highlight of the record. The performance of Midnight here is not describable in words, he brings so much feel in the verses here, which makes it to one of the real great ballads in metal history. (Track rating: 10/10 points)
09 - Eternal World: It contains some complex breaks and riffing, which are always powerful and brilliantly played. After three minutes there comes a very heavy instrumental part, which is in a cool prog-metal style and flues in the final track on the record. (Track rating: 9/10 points)
10 - Transcendence: The title track is the grand final, with magic atmosphere, superb melodies and the great voice of Midnight. This is an outstanding song in whole metal history, Midnight sings here like Robert Plant in some parts, which is a great thing and shows what an superb singer he was. Sadly this was already the zenith of Crimson Glory, with the next album "Strange And Beautiful" they fell down from the top of the hill, reached the bottomline and never get up. (Track rating: 10/10 points)
Overall, this is a splendid power/prog release. Unfortunately, this album is out of print stateside, so if you find this in an import bin (Transcendence is still in print in Europe), you owe it to yourself to pick this album up. Highliest recommended to fans of old Queensryche, Kamelot or Conception and prog/power metal in general! All others should give it a spin too, it's really a metal masterpiece of the late 80's and still one of the highest quality metal albums of all time.
point-system: 0 - 3 points = 1 star / 3.5 - 5.5 points = 2 stars / 6 - 7 points = 3 stars / 7.5 - 8.5 points = 4 stars / 9 - 10 points = 5 stars
Record rating: 9 + 9 + 9.5 + 8.5 + 10 + 8.5 + 9.5 + 10 + 9 + 10 = 93/10 tracks = 9.3 = 9.5 points
Crimson Glory - "Transcendence": 9.5/10 points = 93 % on MPV scale = 5/5 stars
Essential: a masterpiece of progressive music

TOOL — 10,000 DaysReview by tymed (Tyler)
this is probably the most boring piece of music i;ve ever come across. how people are rating some of these songs above 10/10 is beyond any level of understanding. theres only a few songs on here that are interesting enough to listen to in full. i find tunes better than this in the 5$ cd bin at k-mart. i see no progression in this music, nor would i label it as progressive, to me this is jsut another bloodless alternative rock album with some feeble attempts at being progressive.
