Topic: Acoustic guitars Posted: May 10 2006 at 12:35 |
I'm not telling you about the comlexity of arrangements or the virtuosity of guitarists...I'm just curious about your favourite acoustic guitars' bits (pick from the mentioned bands or choose your own)
Mine is definetely GENESIS...with OPETH close second

I saw Tull live yesterday evening in Rome... Ian Anderson's acoustic playing was superb as usual (not to mention his flute). Anyway, I voted "other", as I was thinking of Yes and ELP. Greg Lake's acoustic guitar skills were remarkable, and I think Steve Howe needs no introduction.

Rothery's beautiful work on "Easter" gets me every time. It eventually gives way to that breathtaking solo, but still an acoustic song in my opinion.

In this poll my vote goes to Jethro Tull
Al di Meola, Mclaughlin, Oldfield, are some examples of great acoustic guitar players...
so my "real" vote goes to other..

I have to mention Neal Morse. He's a very skilled acoustic guitarist, check out his work on the albums Beware Of Darkness (middle section of The Doorway and the whole acoustic piece Chatauqua) ans his solo work.

Definitely Genesis with their beautiful atmospheric sound created by these acoustic guitars (especially on albums from Tresspass to Selling England) and some Hackett's solos (eg. Horizons).

I'm going to post a report as soon as I can. Unfortunately today was not a very good day for me, so I didn't feel up to scratch. Hopefully tomorrow I will be able to write something a bit more coherent than I would have today.
BTW, Ian played quite a lot of acoustic guitar yesterday. Pity he's rarely mentioned among the great acoustic players of prog.

Genesis - from Ant Phillips to Steve Hackett - there was always great acoustic guitars.
Another artist with excellent acoustic guitarplay is of course Mike Oldfield (TB, Hergest Ridge and Ommadawn are full of beautiful guitars).

Opeth. Some of the acoustic guitar parts are achingly beautiful, others, darker. I always feel Opeth are a band centred around the acoustic guitar parts. They're the bits that have most impact with me, anyway.

Genesis and Tull both used acoustic guitar brilliantly, although Genesis integrated it better into their overall sound IMO.
Franco Mussida played some wonderful acoustic guitar with PFM - listen any of the first 3 albums for proof, he probably plays more acoustic than electric.
John Etheridge added some wonderful acoustic parts to Wolf and Soft Machine.
John McLaughlin was utterly spectacular on My Goals Beyond.
