Well, in my case I can hardly think of a prog band that has a name of
which I think: "pff, bunch of lame guys, I could've thought of that
one!"
Allthough Genesis is pretty familiar name ofcourse...

Yes, it's like "yeah" man. I don't know how they came up with the
name, but I can imagine the creative brainstorming session.
"So what'll we call our band?"
"Ahhh..."
"What?"
"No."
"No what?"
"Huh?"
"No, no nos, ahhhs, whats or huhs."
"No?"
"Yes."
"I agree."
"Yes?"
"Yes!"

Ha about the "Yes" thing....me and my friend had a "who's on first" thing when discussing them and....well....The Who. Anyways, for most creative name, I'd have to say Sleepytime Gorilla Museum or Godspeed You Black Emperor! *haven't heard either but such great names*

The obvious number 1:
1. Van der Graaf Generator (also with the most original album titles)
2. Pain of Salvation
3. Porcupine Tree
4. Shadow Gallery
5. Dream Theater

Hatfield and the North. What a creative and crazy idea to name a band after a sign on the M1 motorway!

King Crimson. Not only does it sound a bit dangerous and agressive -
like the music, it also sounds very mysterious and overwhelming. It
also sounded familiar when I first heard of 'em. It just sounds great.

I agree with BaldFriede: Hatfield and the North is an absolutely brilliant name for an absolutely brilliant band. King Crimson is also a very beautiful, intense name, which reflects the essence of the band itself. I think most prog bands have very original names - with the exception of ELP (great band, though...), whose name is a bit of an ego trip (no surprises there). Personally, I like names which are taken from literature, such as Soft Machine or the many names inspired by Tolkien's works (I'm not talking about black metal bands, though).

renaissance: a classical, high society & refined name
gryphon: a legendary sacred bird that deserves respect & admiration, like the band
mad crayon: evokes the capability to produce Dali-esque paintings & drawings
iluvatar: a subtle mix of mythological & futuristic name at the level of deity.
violet district: a trendy title that refers to a hot city sector where technology & ruins share the space.

1 Van der Graaf Generator - You just know it will be something dark and complex.
2 Soft Machine - Confusing in the most positive way.
3 Träd, Gras och Stenar (Trees, Grass and Rocks) - Swedish Progg. How can you not like it?
4 Magma - Sounds great and means melted rocks, or floating lava.
5 Univers Zero - Dark and mysterious, just like the music.
I don't know if thes qualifies as creative names in the same way as say
Sleepytime Gorilla Museum. But they are some of my favorite band names.
And they all make sense when you hear the music they make. I love King
Crimson and Curved Air as well.

Italian band names are amazing, also: That Old Inn, Fate's Inn, Marconi's Awarded Bakery, Mutual Helping Bank, A Ticket To Hell, The Bronze Ballet, etc. also some Brazilian band names: Remembering Apple's Valley, Sacred Heart Of The Earth, Pits & Clouds and... Blezqi Zatsaz (which has no real meaning ).
