I used to like them a lot- but after a while all of their songs started becoming very tedious. They need to differ their songs a bit.

Great band! Very unique and hypnotic. I can certainly understand how some may not like them, and i sometimes get a little tired with them if i listen for too long, but i find them fantastic none-the-less.

They seem to be getting more and more experimental as well. The polymeters are getting more intense and complex, i believe they're starting to experiment a little more with odd time sigs, as opposed to the old constant 4/4 thing, and they were complex enough with 4/4!

And i second the Sol Niger Within recommendation. I have the original version, and it's completely insane. A less mechanical, avant-gardish Meshuggah. What a trip!

They were just pretty good up until I and Catch 33, which are two of the most original and intense metal albums I've ever heard and have propelled them into the ranks of my favorite bands.  Tomas Haake is ridiculous.

They are a great band, but I can't help getting a little aggravated with their relentless heavy music. Other than their last two releases, I can't really get through a full album.

But yes, they are ridiculous, and I have a tremendous amount of respect for them.

Still, they're amazing to listen to.  They're one of those bands that you can never quite keep up with, and just when you think you can, they're a step ahead again.

Check out Textures - they just released a new album. They remind me of Meshuggah a lot, but they are much more melodic and diverse. Doesn't mean that they're better than Meshuggah though - I like them both!

Just checked them out... Textures definitely get my seal of approval!  Thumbs Up

What Textures cd have you listened to?

If it's Drawing Circles I think that cd is pretty good but their debut Polars is killer.

It was Drawing Circles, but I will check out the other one too, thanks!

In my opinion, "I" is the single best progressive metal song ever written. Absolutely stunning. Catch-33 is fantastic too but drags in some places. Though the "Mind's Mirror" may be one of the greatest moments of progressive metal ever. When ever I hear "I" or "Minds", I think to myself that THIS is what so-called prog-metal should sound like.

You're forgetting the 4-note motif that is played at least once during the first 3 or 4 tracks off "Chaosphere". And they DO have melody, listen to "Acrid Plasticity" and the unbelievably uplifting solo to "Sublevels", quite possibly one of the bests solos ever.

And the last minute and a half of "Straws Pulled at Random" from Nothing.  That's some pretty cool use of melody, and almost in a major key!

I can listen to some of their stuff from time to time, but quite often I find the songs extremely monotone and never going anywhere... Simply not my taste normally, I guess

I think they are a good band but are overrated. They repeat a lot of parts in songs and they sometimes become tedious. Very talented musicians though.
