I don't think that these two bands can be compared to one another.
I mean, they both played different styles of rock music, so the comparison doesn't stand and it would be a rather childish exercise. |

Uriah Heep is exceedingly mellow to me... then my vote goes to Deep Purple, specially for the Coverdale/Hughes Years...

Before I was caught by Prog I listened both bands, always saw Deep Purple like a good Hard Rock band but nothing else.
On the other hand I always found something special in URIAH HEEP that was never able to find in DP, for me "Look at Yourself" is a masterpiece.
URIAH HEEP
Enough said.

I love both bands.
Purple have much more skills as musicans, but Heep have better materiall, IMHO. Theire materiall was never very complex, but they allways made it pompus and proud sounding. And I allways felt sorry for David Byron, he looked up to Rod Stewart and wanted to immitate him. Its sad that he dident see that he was way more talented, and had a better voice.
I also saw both bands live 2,5 years ago, in a double concert, Uriah heep, opened and Purple finnished.
Uriah Heep, played a much better show than Purple, Heep was rocking from start to end.
So my vote goes to Uriah Heep. |

These bands can´t be compared to eatch other really, they just were hard rock bands but very differend in the way to approach to music. Deep Purple was rocking harder in general but Uriah Heep had much more interesting musically, at times beeing much more progressive than most bands at the time. I remember from my childhood only few rock bands that could make shivers go down the spine because of their music, the first was Hendrix´s "All Along the Watchtower", second was Uriah Heep´s "High Priestess". Heep´s music had that kinda MAGIC on all their albums til "Sweet Freedom". David Byron had that CHARISMA on his voice and on his stage persona, he just was the perfect flamboyant frontman for the band. Ian Gillan didn´t have that charisma and voice, for me he was just another screaming, thought a good one, rock and roller. Althought the music only matters and therefore I voted for Heep. Two great bands - one led by an ego maniac who could'nt stand being overshadowed by the singer - if I had to pick it would be Heep (Byron-era) - Purple became too commercial IMO.
