Topic: Best really REALLY cheap distortion pedal. Posted: May 03 2006 at 17:16 |
Notice a trend folk? I run on a TIGHT budget, but I get to, I'm hald Scottish. But hey! What is the best budget crunchy pedal out there? I am talking sub £20 budget. I am spending a good wodge of coash on a Marshall Echohead delay pedal (prog-TASTIC!), but I need a little bit of dirt in my signal chain, as my trusty old Korg AX10 G is not fit for stage use... well neither is a sub £20 crunch box, but you see my drift. Those wee Behringers? They any good? I go on Harmony Central, but its half and half with anything there, people either love their kit or hate it!

If you can find one, try a Soundtank Black Noise. I think Soundtank was an offsoot of Ibanez. I got one from a second hand shop and it really sounds great. I can get from a subtle distortion to a Neil Young "Live Rust" sound.

There are also those Daneletro FAB pedals, which cost £20 each, new. Simple lettle pedals and apparently very good.

anelectro it will probably be! I was listening to live at Leeds today, the way Townsend uses a mildly crunchy amp then a fuzzbox is genious.

The really budget way to get the sound you want could be to make a couple of small tears in your speaker cones... instant distortion! You then just need a roadie standing by with strips of sellotape to apply on signal when you want a clean sound.
Simple and cheap!

You could simply eat several cans of beans and apply some rear-miking for a similar effect, if you don't want to ruin your expensive speakers.

I would say stay away from the beringer stomp boxes.
I`ve tried most of them, and theire not doing much besides occupie space.
The danelectro fab, is an ok distrotion pedal, but it sounds cheap and buzzzzzy to me, kinda like a zoom pedal.
My best advice is get a big muff, or a marshall distrotion pedal.
Just my to cents.

As a thought, instead of splashing out a huge wodge on a delay, and getting a cheap fuzz box, why not go for a Line 6 Pod?
That'll give you several delays and fuzz boxes - not to mention flangers, phasers and amp modelling, so you can sound like you've got a Mesa Boogie.

You should get an Ibanez Tube Screamer - THE classic cheap distortion stomp box!

The last time my band rehearsed, my friend brought along his sister's toy speaker/microphone thing (presumably so kids can sing along with a CD). It was low enough quality that using it created a heavy distortion sound (plus, it had an echo knob). We tried holing it up to the gutar/bass amps, but we got the best effect out of it by putting it in the bell of my trombone (which made it sound almost exactly like an extremely distorted electric guitar).

Who said experimentation is dead, eh?
