I think he was a very good drummer. It's not easy to play that kind of music, and all he did fit the sound of Gentle Giant really well. I have seen GG in DVD and looking at his movements and face expressions I think he really seemed to feel the music.

He seemed to be three different people: Martin Smith, Malcolm Mortimore & John Weathers. I prefer when he was Mortimore, followed closely by when he was Smith. When he was Weathers, he often seemed like only a timekeeper.

It is extremely hard to even be a time keeper in that band!!! NAh but weathers was pretty good, he seemed like kind of a straight ahead guy...not a show off...but never screwed up. i like him a lot for that

Excellent drummer - one of prog's best. All over Freehand with a vengeance. Great stuff.

I actually think of every musician in Gentle Giant, Weathers kept
things as simple as he could considering the controlled mayhem that was
being played around him. I think if he had over-played more it would
have infringed on the beauty of the musical complexity. I think he was
the perfect drummer for the band.

Weathers is my favorite of the three drummers. It seemed to me that starting with his first album (Octopus), GG went in a very different direction due to his amazing ability to play funky, groovy backbeats in the structure of GG's quirky songs. No other prog band I know of was as downright danceable---while remaing very complex---as Gentle Giant after JP joined.

Yes to everything positive thats been said about J.'Pugwash' Weathers, assuming also that he is the drummer we are being invited to talk about-- that's not to detract from Mortimore [who I also really liked] or Smith. The only live drumming I've either seen or heard is JPW and,for me, that's the real test. Are there any good live recordings of the others of which anyone is aware?

Looking still the same after all these years...

Perfect for the band. And watch the DVD's - he sings with the 5-part harmonies, plays vibes perfectly adequately and guitar too. rarely flashy, but always solid.
