Topic: Prog music under attack!! on Satellite radio (XM) Posted: April 30 2006 at 12:06 |
XM satellite radio has CANCELLED the progressive channel (Music Lab ch# 51) from its on-air linup! I would encourage anyone who has XM or would ever consider getting a satellite radio in the future to contact XM and let them know that we want the prog channel back! Contact XM on-line at xmradio.com - go to "contact us" and click on "program/show requests". (or call 1-800 XM Radio)
The Music Lab had an excellent playlist, featuring a wide variety of prog artists and usually playing rare or long tracks, NOT just the popular hits. (IMO "Music Lab" was better than Sirius radio's "the Vault" because the "Music Lab" played ONLY prog music as opposed to a mix of prog/non-prog). Some of the bands played most often on "Music Lab":
King Crimson
Genesis
Pink Floyd
Camel
Gentle Giant
ELP
Yes
Colosseum (I & II)
Gong
Caravan
Dream Theater
Porcupine Tree
Mars Volta
IQ
Nektar
Van Der Graaf
Brand X
Weather Report
National Health
Strawbs
Marillion
FM
Rick Wakeman
Hawkwind
Return to Forever
Phish
The Nice
UK
Bring back the Music Lab!!!

By the way, I forgot to ask: Does anyone else out there have Satellite Radio?

I listened to the station once in my friends car coming home from
senoir week and it was pretty amazing. I went out and bought three cds
the next day based on songs I heard on the station.

Don't panic, many of the songs appear on Top Tracks. I was disappointed by the decision too. Enough that I bought an Ipod in anticipation of dropping XM.
I thought it over and decided to keep XM if for nothing else to hear music I've not heard before.
MusicLab is still available online, FWIW.

Unfortunatly, I drive for a living so I can only get it by satt, not on-line. It seems like a lame excuse, if they still produce the show (for the net) why not just broadcast it anyways? I called cust. service, they gave me the same response about top tracks (ch # 46) or fine tuning (#76) but the difference is that the Music Lab played RARE tracks from RARE bands, not just hits like Top Tracks. (eg. you could hear 10+ min tracks). Also I want a PROG music channel, not a few leftovers between other stuff.
I hope everyone who reads this will take a minute to fire off an e-mail to XM!

Its really too bad because it was such a great station. And it seems like they will kill "Musical Starstreams" too. (ambient-electronic show)
