Topic: Punky's Whips Posted: April 28 2006 at 21:35 |
It is on Zappa in New York. The song is not Zappa at his best.
Zappa is basically attacking Punky Meadows who was the guitarist for Angel. Angel's first two albums leaned towards progressive. They were the original hair band and they fell apart in the very early 80's.
I was wondering, are there other examples of artists going after each other? Do some prog artists hate each other? Not the ones who were in bands together and learned to hate each other, but ones who just plainly hate each other.

I wouldn't say it necessarily is an ATTACK on Mr. Meadows. It's basically about drummer Terry Bozzio seeing a photo of Punky and thinking he was a woman.
As far as blood feuds in prog rock, there's the war of words between Geoff Tate and somebody from Dream Theater.....

I guess I thought Bozzio was gay. That's his business but that was the impression I was left with.

Well, on the Track "Fun" off of Kevin Gilberts "The Shaming of the True" Kev attacked his ex. Sheryl Crow by the line
"And Sheryl's in the Kitchen with the L.A. Lakers Tryin to get herself laid But There Aint No Takers Coz They heard about the guy that she did with aids And she's callin Um' Fags Saying There Afraid She Wants Fun"
Granted, only one of the two artists are prog, but still an example.

I think most Progressive rock artist don't see the point in fighting. They are very intellegent people compared to say, 80's metal bands.

Yeah like Steve Howe and Rick Wakeman when recording Union.

Not really attack, but more of an homage... ... Meadows actually said he liked the song later on, it gave him a good laugh (I forget the source of that, but I read it somewhere). Great song though, one of my absolute favorites.
