Large guitarist. One of the better in absolute. Discussing with some my friends I risked that Hendrix, like the Cream, is one of the artists that invented the Prog. I have reason?

No! I mean Hendrix is one of those artists that are great, but can't really be considered "prog" - I mean you wouldn't say the likes of Deep Purple, Beatles, Queen, or Status Quo were prog would you? Oh hang on........(only joking about Status Quo...I think....)

He was one of the best musicians in history. I have dozens of his albums, I adore his music... But I think his output is mostly a unique and wonderful psychedelic rock / blues... There are many prog elements in "Axis, bold as love" and "Electric Ladyland", but I don't think that's enough.
Anyway, who cares? He was really great.

Bingo (although I voted "Yes")...He's one of the fathers of prog, along with other musical forms & styles...

So, why doesn't the fact that he was an innovator or a genius make him prog? He did countless things never done before, rote songs in ways never written, and changed the way people looked at the guitar from then on.
How is this not considered progressive?

Hendrix challenged the whole way music was made and perceived. That does not however mean he was in any way associated with prog.

I was reading through the definatition as well, personally I just think any artist that progresses the craft over his/her career, is progressive. Artists who learn how to rythmically and stratigically place notes to create an overarching atmosphere to a song, and do it in unique ways each time. For instance though Paul Simon would not be catagorized as prog-rock, I would consider him progressive as he has branched off into dozens of different styles and sounds over the years, as well as progressing as a musician. As for Jimi Hendrix, he was definately progressive in the ways he used the studio, and played live. And though he adventured into psychedellic rock as well - so did Zappa. Had Hendrix lived past his untimely death, who knows what he would have ventured into - listening to First Rays, is only just a taste of the rythms he was going after. I vote yes, even though it may not be prog-rock - he was a progressive artist.

when jimi hendrix arrived on the music scene in England in 1966 everyone was totally gobsmacked by his virtuosity and his humble personality - greats like eric clapton, jimmy page and pete townsend were in awe of him, townsend even said they felt like little boys with their toys in comparison. rock legends queued up to see him play. throughout all the success and adulation he remained professional and worked very hard, and remained a likeable personality. in his short career he practically re-invented electric guitar music, and was many many years ahead of his time live (a real showman!) and especially in the studio. he was progressive in the real meaning of the word but his music does not fit the generally accepted term today. his music remains the close study of music professors, budding guitarists and ordinary fans worldwide and will remain so for very many years to come.
