The 13th Floor Elevators

This legendary garage band of Texas helped invent the genre of psychedelic rock with there use of the legendary 'electric jug' and creating an atmosphere to there music rather than relying on melody. Not to mention there insanity driven philosophical lyrics that boggle ones mind. Possibley proto-prog because of the sonic steps they made towards the genre. The amazing  Roky Erickson was yet another lysergic victim just as the legendary Syd Barrett.

no you're not alone, Rocky Erickson had some truly mind boggling lyrics that weren't all that complicated, but just made you think "how did he come up with such simple yet effective lines?", musically a great and fun band too, though I dont listen to them as much as say, Silver Apples, Love, Red Krayola and Os Mutantes,.... the Elevators still deserve plenty of my respect!

I thought psychedelia more or less started with the Byrds.

Great to see Silver Apples get a mention - there are too many fantastic and overlooked bands like this;

Morton Subotnik (the composer), Fifty Foot Hose, White Noise, Country Joe and the Fish, Chrysalis, Twink/Deviants/Aquarian Age, Creation and Clear Light for starters...

But the 13th Floor Elevators were an amazing band too

I'd recommend Chrysalis if you like the more folk/jazz oriented side of Prog - their album "Definition" is just amazing.

If you prefer electronica, then Fifty Foot Hose's "Cauldron" is worth checking out - White Noise are incredible given the year their "Electric Storm" album was released.
    
Morton Subotnik's album "Silver Apples of the Moon" inspired the legendary group "Silver Apples" to release a self-titled electronica album which is pretty good, and the most progressive Country Joe album is "Electric Music for Mind and Body".
