I tihnk we could use a hard/dark prog section. I defiantly have always felt that King Crimson was neither Symphonic prog or Art rock. and they are very heavy at times, almost bordering progmetal, so I vote YES

I can strangle a canary in a tin can and it would be really original, but that wouldn't save it from sounding like utter sh*t.

I'm strongly against allowing multiple genres per album - it makes the programming AND the presentation much more complicated. And it confuses the visitor ... maybe we could add a "secondary genre", so that for albums which are in between genres we can select a main genre and another one. But I would definitely not recommend allowing a list of genres per album.
Yes, secondary genre could work! It would read "Symphonic Prog with Avant-Prog influences", for example.

- OSIBISA (Psyche, Proto Prog and Folk/Ethnic are all perfect for Woyaya and the self titled, if you add heads. it has also Funk and Reggae.
- Miranda Sex Garden; The album called Fairytales of Slavery and Carnival of Souls bklend Folk, Goth and post Rock.
But there should always be a main genre.
Ex: Prog Metal, RIO
So are SLEEPY TIME GORILLA MONSTER records ?
Not my field or my cup of tea, so leave this to the experts. NP: NHL playoffs 2006 ;-)

That would entail soo much work though. I think if people are really that interested in exactly what kind of music it is, they will buy the album
|

The benefit of this work would be more exact recommendations and top lists. Currently the lists are not exactly helpful in finding similar albums, but they could be.

Exactly. I've been using the Archives mainly in search of fresh Prog and this would really help my quest. I also think your idea of simply putting a genre selection list on the reviews page (instead of moderating the options for each album) would mean very little extra workload for reviewers.
Plus, you could introduce such a system "unmoderated" and simply give collaborators the opportunity to "moderate" on the genre-options for specific albums if there is a need for it (for instance: abusive fanboys).
But most of all, I very much appreciate the hard work all of you put into this site. it has been (and still is) a great source of new prog discoveries for me. Thanks.

Well I love the album by album classification idea as everyone else here seems to as well. It would be great while reading a discography of an unfamiliar band to see how the band progressed their music and where they took their creativity. While it might be a hard task it would probably be well worth it in the end.
