The problem is that many "hard Prog" bands as I see it are already in Proto-Prog  .

I know some of these aren't Proto, but most of them I can see as "hard Prog."

If Gentle Giant is "Hard prog" then certainly Echolyn should be there too? If hard prog is meant as hard to get into, complex then it occurs to me I have never had too much problems getting into (most) Gentle Giant songs. A band like ELP is more difficult for me although i think i ultimately like them. As i don't know yet what "Hard prog" is supposed to mean i reserve judgement.

I think they're more symphonic as a band. Some songs are similar to Gentle Giant, as are some Spock's Beard songs ... but not the whole albums.

I suggest that we'll have both genre by album and genre by band at the same time.
Example: Zappa (main genre, RIO/Avant-Prog) Subgenres for Zappa:
Jazz-Rock/Fusion: Hot Rats, Waka/Jawaka, The Grand Wazoo, One Size Fits All, Sleep Dirt
Prog-Rock: Over-Nite Sensation, Apostrophe, Joe's Garage etc.
etc.

I always thougt GG were pretty symphonic in the first place. Nowadays Echolyn doesn't resemble GG too much but albums as "As the world" and "Suffocating the bloom" have a distinct GG ring about them .These are also the albums that i love the most of this band. The site is changing pretty fast the last days, keeps us interested  .

Initially my reaction to this intended move was - Wow Great!!  - However I am inclined to agree with MustShaveBeard - that this will create confusion. I personally feel that Progressive Rock Groups/Musicians are well catagorized now into their various genres. Most groups do develop and change their styles over their period of existence particularly those who have been going for more than 10years which I think that most Prog fans understand. King Crimson is a good example of diverse changes during it's 30+years of existence. Why place King Crimson under several sub-genres to reflect this change, when historically it will always be regarded as a pioneering symphonic prog (or Art Rock!!) group? It seems to me to be a lot unnecessary(?) extra work, to change a system that is very good as it is.
BTW it may sound that I am adverse to change - I am not, generally speaking. Only on this occassion.

I don't think that change could generate confusion, If every band conserve their generic style and inside it we have the style of the album.
Examples:
Opeth - Progressive Metal (Ghost Reveries: Progressive Metal; Damnation: Symphonic (Soft?) Prog, etc...
Rush - Art Rock (Rush: Prog Related, 2112: Hard Prog Rock?, Moving Pictures: Art Rock...
The only problem is know the general genre of each band, a lot of bands change their style frecuently (King Crimson or "even" Sieges Even recently -the fantastic Navigating by the Stars-), but this is an inherent problem to prog: the progressiveness.

Well then we shuld have a Light prog category aswell dont you think with: Genesis, Yes, Pink Floyd and some other pop/prog bands.

Totally agree with such flexiblity. In that way any album by a band,
that happens not to fit any one of our "Honest" labels of prog
sub-genres (when other albums by the band do), then it is listed as
"non-prog, but of perphiral interest" but shouldn't be
reviewed..................

I think HARD TOO GET INTOO is very subjektive, so I dont like HARD PROG as a subgenre at all.. To me gentle giant was love at first listen due too the wonderful harmonies, instrumentally, and vocally
But they are challenging, , but that is subjective too...Symphonic prog is a broad sub-genre, and i think we should put them there. We can describe the music subjectively, and then the word hard can be used. That is my opinion

I don't think that Van der Graaf Generator is hard prog. Maybe on some parts but they are symphonic prog.......
