would have enjoyed. but not that splatter orgy of his. no, Mr. King,
you failed; back to the beginner's course for you! but there would
probably have been a lot less readers had he written the book the way I
suggested. why, I bet his harcore fans skip the first few pages to get
to the gorey passages!

That's not entirely fair, Jean - true, Needful Things wasn't SK's best book (written firmly with an eye to a film script, in my opinion), and yes, some of his novels have in the past strayed into more visceral areas than may be necessary, but you shouldn't judge his 30+ years of writing by one book you read but didn't enjoy.

King has written some real gems over the years, but the appreciation of novels is like appreciation of music; utterly subjective - my personal favorites of his include (among others):

The Dark Tower series
The Stand
Rita Hayworth & The Shawshank Redemption
The Long Walk

etc etc etc

Hey - you may hate them all, you may find one there which flicks your switch, but don't dismiss King out of hand, eh?

Maybe we could start a book discussion group when we all descend on the restaurant...

They are shooting The Long Walk movie right now.

I hope they do it justice because that is my favorite King novella.

Ever since I read it,when I walk a considerable distance and start to feel fatigued,I think of that story.

Jorge Luis Borges - A Universal History of Iniquity

Read three or four of the short stories contained therein so far, rather interesting I must say.

I have Ficciones to read next.  I have all the penguin translations by Andrew Hurley, minus the poetry, which I may get at a later date.

I've not really hit his good stuff yet though.

I have each volume separated into books Ric.  I have "The Universal History of Iniquity" (which is his first collection as far as I am aware), then I have a separate collection "Fictions" (which is of "Ficciones") and then "The Aleph", "Brodie's Report" and "The Book of Sand".

I don't think it's the same works, but if we start Ficciones together, then of course, that'd be similar.

I'm reading this:

I presume you have:

I'm not sure where that Evaristo Carriego biography is, but it's not in my collection!

I like his books very much, but it's hard for me to describe them. You might like to start with The Name of the Rose. If you don't like it, you probably won't like his other books either.

I like "Baudolino" by Umberto Eco very much. as an historian who specialized in ancient and middle ages it is very interesting to see how Eco combined several myths of the middle ages in this book. and very funny too. I read the other books of Eco too, but "Baudolino" is my favorite

Very intresting stuff, but somewhat heavy reading if your used to Tom Clancy novels.

Right now I'm reading:

Very good stuff, even better than volume I.

I've never read any Tom Clancy Mickey, so I don't know if it'll be hard going or not.  Bare in mind I like Kafka and I'm just trying to get into Borges, I like the more challenging side of novels and short stories.

Thanks for the recommendations Vompatti and Jean.

Ah Rico, we have almost got the same thing though, you seem to have a few of his earlier works that I do not have.

You do have Ficciones and A Universal History of Iniquity (or Infamy as it is often called also).  Do let me know how you get on with them.

His later stuff is much different I believe, Ficciones and The Aleph are apparently his best "collections".
