I think the reason why most dismiss The Stones is because they are all very average musicians, a bit like U2 in a way. There isn´t much to get worked up about. Like who says "That drummer is great" or "Listen to that solo" It´s too simple.

They do have many great songs ... 40-50 of them, unfortunately the vast majority dates from 1965 to 1973 ...

After that they became a cabaret act, IMO ... and the loss of Brian Jones' innovative instrumentation and then that of Mick Taylor's playing meant that the band from then on was solid, but not specatular ...

They're great, they use to be. They should have stopped long ago. Favourites songs : Mothers Little Helper ( great lyrics ) and Paint it Black.

But they should have hung it up awhile ago.

They are O.K. but... Jagger and Richards have never been  good mates with the rest of the members / former members of the band. That is the most important bad point about them, IMO. For example, I read that Bill Wyman  said that the song "Jumpin`Jack Flash" was started during a jam by him, Brian Jones and Charlie Watts, when the other two didn`t arrive to the rehearsal. The other two arrived later, heard what the others were playing, liked the music, and composed part of the song, but... when the song was released, the composers were listed as "Jagger / Richards, and the other three were not credited for their  original idea.

Brian Jones was very underrated by the band despite all his contributions in arrangements and he played a lot of different instruments to their best songs of their career (1963-1968).

Mick Taylor was a very good lead guitarist, but he maybe was bored because the only songs the Stones recorded were composed by Jagger / Richards.

If someone wants an example of "Rock and Roll Dictatorship", Jagger / Richards are the best example, IMO.

Agreed with you Chris and Martin >> their better tracks are up to 74 after which Taylor left.

Their best album is Let It Bleed

I would stretch the list of correct STONES years up to 78 and the Some Girls album (their last worthy one, even if I like also 86's Dirty Work), but since that era is now long-gone

Never saw the big deal. I understand that they are important in the evolution of rock & roll, but their music isn't very good. "Paint It Black" is the only song I've ever liked by them.

Well no one can argue about the greatness of albums like Beggars banquet, let it bleed, sticky fingers & exile on main st, some of the greatest rock albums of all time, so i have to say they are great or they was great in the 60's & 70's then after that it was

I think Taylor eventually got totally pissed by Jagger literally pulling the plug on his guitar solo - Jagger didn't want too much  spotlight on other members of the band - and then the matey/matey arrangement of borrowing Ron Wood from the Faces probably provided the straw that broke.......
