When I mean pre-rock, I mean before 1956 when blues and rock guitarists like Chuck Berry, BB King and Buddy Guy were starting to come into the forefront.

I would probably give it a tie between Les Paul and Chet Atkins. Both of them were highly influencial. There is of course really no dispute about Johnson's influence as a songwriter, but as a guitarist that may be a different question.

I'm sure there are a few I missed, so let's hear it.
