It's really hard to choose. I LOVE mellotron, moog, flute and piano, but my vote goes to guitar (thinking about Steve's wailing at the end of Supper's Ready). |

I think the Mellotron is truly unique to prog and some of my favorite songs feature the mellotron. I choose the mellotron.

I chose the guitar - partly because I play guitar and it is a very expressive instrument. But also because with my new GR20 guitar synthesiser I can play other instruments on the guitar. Some are more successful than others, however the saxaphones are beautiful to play (bending notes naturally on the guitar sounds like a saxaphone bending naturally). With over 400 sounds (including great organs and strings) I am as happy as a pig in mud!

The mellotron is cool...for something a bit more rare, how about the SyntheAxe (in the right hands of course)? Only about 200 were ever made...The guy with Bela Fleck is pretty good with it, of course Holdsworth is the master...

I chose Hammond because though moog, mellotron and piano are essential
for progressive and I love even the Moog sounds (that's why I've bought
an analog synth) and the mellotron orchestrations, Hammond is part of
most major rock bands from the late sixties and seventies (even not
prog) and amazing songs can be done only with hammond and precussion
(or drums).

To: saarepiiga... check out this link: http://www.hollis.co.uk/john/synthaxe.html , or here for nice pictures: http://www.open-tuning.com/img/SynthAxe.html Users that I'm aware of: Allan Holdsworth, "Future Man" (Bela Fleck), Michael Jackson's guitarist on the BAD tour, Lee Rittenour, Chuck Hammer (Lou Reed/Bowie), Al Di Meola Some people use the term generically to refer to midi-equipped guitars, but that's not what this is... Have also seen it spelled "Synthaxe"...Launched in 1984 (or 1986 depending on who you believe), contained 8 "computers" & 50 chips, came in 4 colors, heavy... |

My favorite is definitely Hammond organ and ...church organ ( what a pity that we can't vote for this instrument 'cos there were a lot of good church organ parts in prog history like Wakeman's or van den Linden's playing ). I really like piano and Moog too. I prefer keyboards in general.

Mellotron was what I voted. Organ is also one of my favourites. There's something about the organ's sound that just totally nukes all other instruments in terms of sound, and it gets this sort of generic yet down to earth yet complex in emotion and meaning sort of sound. Actually, now I wish I'd voted organ...

For me it would have to be...
1: Mellotron 2: Drums 3: All other keyboards 4: Guitar 5: Flute 6: Bass 7: Violin 8: Reeds 9: All other percussion I suppose voice would have to go in there somewhere too.. |

The progressive rock is often nailed as 'too clinical', 'too technical' and 'too self-indulgent' To be serious, this ubiquitous and unsurpassed instrument manages to evoke extensive goose bumps every time I am listening to it, from the compositions In The Court Of The Crimson King, Down By The Sea (Greenslade) and Zarathustra (Museo Rosenbach) to Tide (Greenslade), Afterglow (Genesis-Seconds Out) and almost the entire Barclay James Harvest album Live, A BIG HAND FOR THE MELLOTRON By the way, the many imperfections and limitations from the Mellotron made it such a moving experience! |

There are lots of nice instruments, but I think moog is the most rapresentative...

Though the Mellotron is probably THE prog instrument, I voted for the Hammond - I really love its distinctive sound! Anyway, my favourite instrument is the bass guitar, and prog can count on some of the greatest bass players in rock.

Very nearly voted for the Mellotron...but I think it has to be the Hammond, so versatile and such a great sound.

Good poll. I love the use of flute in Prog, although if you had
included 12-string guitar as an option, I might have voted for that.
