Topic: Dream Theater’s Dark Side Released Posted: April 13 2006 at 19:57 |
I think DSoTM is over rated. I think mainly because its the album Floyd Fans know. Meddle I think is better. DT is my second faviourite band under Pink Floyd and I was very interested in this cover. I managed to get a copy of only the first CD but still I was happy. They cover it imo incredibly well without putting their own style into it, but thats what I would have like to hear, DT doing DSoTM not DT covering DSotM. Original is better, nothing can beat it. But this is still fantastic. I wanted to hear them play WYWH or The Wall tho.

I'm not interested.
I'm sure the cover is competent, but that's it. DT got me into prog and I still like them a lot, but they are hardly a great band.

Amazing stuff if you ask me. Still not for sale though.

Meh. Floyd has a lot of great albums with interesting material.
But it's important to remember that DSOTM was a profoundly innovative
album. It really blew the world away when it came out, partly because
of the totally new sounds, partly because of the unusually perceptive
and human lyrics (especially for prog rock, which tends to go off the
deep end), partly for Alan Parson's brilliant engineering and
production work, and partly because this is the album where Gilmore
first becomes a guitar god (though he was clearly moving there in
Meddle).
People often evaluate art by its context and impact. As such,
DSOTM was one of the most influential albums ever made in any
genre. It's up there with Sgt. Pepper's, Ziggy Stardust, and
Never Mind the Bollocks as albums that most changed the course of music
history. So I think the accolades are justified, even if it isn't
always my favorite Floyd album.
There's a reason it was the longest in the top two hundred
albums. It had staying power that lasted multiple decades.
Just last year I played it for my sister in law, who is 17 years
younger. She said she won't listen to music the same way ever
again. It is that kind of album, even more than 30 years later.

Many years ago a friend of mine send me a cassette tape (i said: many years ago) with a band doing covers of rock classics, and I liked very much. It was the 'Change of Seasons' by DT, a band that I heard before but didn't liked. Then I buyed various albuns and became a DT fan. But then came the '6 Degrees' and 'Train of Thought' albuns and I forgot them again...
The years passed and I heard that they were doing live versions of complete classic rock albuns. I remembered that they did great covers in the past, and when I heard that they were doing 'DSotM' I became interested. Then I downloaded a live version of it, but when I listened... what a deception... It was only a fine copy of the original ! They didn't added nothing, absolutely nothing to the songs... It's something like 'The Moon Revisited' by Magna Carta...
If you want good covers of PINK FLOYD songs by great bands that did own personnel versions, try 'Signs of Life - Angular Tribute to PF'. It's excellent !!! Forget this DT xerox copy versions...

And for some reason I think it absolutely SUCKS that they've recorded the gig in London... I was there, in Amsterdam... Call me selfish, but I just think so
By the way, in Japan they played 'Made in Japan', right? Will that be released?

i feel the same way ...
but it's not bad or anything ... maybe a bit overrated or something ...
or maybe not :)
saying that it's better then meddle is risky for me, because most tracks on it suck (imo). Even one of these days gets boring fast ... that just leaves echoes which is nice ...

Call me crazy or whatever you want, but i really think that Pink Floyd in general is overrated

I have heard the bootleg and it sounds nearly the same as the original. I expected Petrucci to play his own solos but he just reproduces note by note the original Gilmour solos, trying to sound exactly the same. And he gets it, but I don't see the interest of buying this. It's exactly the same DSOTM we all know. I already have it.

It's one of Dream Theater's "official" bootlegs from their label Ytsejam
records. So it's official and was sold at their show but it's not a major label
release if that's what you mean.

I have listened the cd, I have to say it are good cover's. LaBrie has a good voice, bu imo you shouldn't cover songs from a great band like Pink Floyd. Dream Theater is a great band too, but with an other character and an other sound. I shouldn´t make covers anyway.

They are releasing it in two weeks (i think) on the Ytsejam records website.
Since I know someone asked: LaBrie's vocals sound great on the CD. He
really did a great job at least IMO.
