The only Zeuhl I've really gotten into is Magma and Dun. I've heard a few other bands, but they didn't do anything for me.

You think that a label like Soleil Zeuhl or Musea would have given this a proper reissue by now, all of their albums,
how many Eider Stellaire albums are there anyway, about 3 or 4?

Hi mithrandir...!
I only have three. If there are more let me know...!
1st...stunning, as you know...! Original in a "Star-sign" blue cover, re-issues in a re-print of the 2nd's jacket
2nd...man, oh, man, did this take a long time to 'get' into...! You guys may think this is to the 1st what Van Halen II is to Van Halen I but man...! ...it's like way out there (in the taste stakes) Love it now but it took a good 35 listens until I was happy. Collectors: If you see this or the 1st going cheap(ish) don't hesitate...! (but I hope you are buying it for the music)
3rd...Musea label...easiest to get hold off. A very pleasant Zeuhl/Jazz/Lounge affair it is too...but be aware this clocks in at around the 25 to 30 minute mark
So come on Soleil Zeuhl...! Release these beauties NOW...!
...or...I may do it myself (...and trust me the artwork would be better ) x_O

Bebe Godzilla is a classic, however:

.......please release that treble-cd of the first 3 records and some bonus tracks (not including any dodgy live-shows of course and any new bands you have lined up) Come on guys...demos, old stuff, we won't judge you for it.......we just wanna hear it. Right Guys !

I see we are graced with a poet in our midst.
ahhahah.. lovin the sig as well. Keeps my PM busy from
people wondering who the hell that group is. I was going to change up
the sig and avatar at the 2000 post level like I did at 1000 but the
sig is being nominated for the Micky sig Hall of Fame. I had a
great Magma pic I was going to use. We'll see when the time gets
closer. Lots of opportunities to...spread the word about Osanna and

that album along with Ys, and Per Un Amico really put the zap on my
head. Really opened my eyes to a world of great prog outside of
the English prog I grew up with. Having become a
semi-regular poster here I've had a chance to meet some great people
here (they know who they are) that have opened my eyes even wider to
the Spanish, non-Zeuhl French, and the Japanese scenes. If only
money grew on trees..... I would die a happy man hahahah. Have a good night.. time for some unbeauty sleep.

Great thread,
I am just starting to enter 'Zeuhl' through the front door with Magma; as I luckily found nearly all their records in the Parisian library system, I am doing a chronological retrospektive. I just arrived at Live/Hai and up to now my favourite 3 are:
-Khntarksz/ Live-Hai/ -1001 Centigrades
to be continued... BTW what band/record should I continue with in terms of musical continuity after Magma?

I'd definitely say try out Koenjihyakkei especially if your into the vocal/chant side of Magma,
also some of of Magma's contemporaries, most of which are mentioned in this thread, Weidorje, Dun, Zao, etc, also the the first 4 Art Zoyd albums,

You're obviously a Zeuhl machine. I deeply appreciate that since Magma is also my favorite band and I've been fortunate to see them 4 or 5 times in the past 6 years or so, although I do not know a fraction of the Zeuhl that you do. Great stuff you've suggested and thank you for sharing your knowledge. The hunt for great Zeuhl continues.
However, I was surprised that you (and others) consider Kohntarkosz to be Magma's greatest. I like it, but it is neither my favorite, second favorite, nor third favorite. I find the title track(s) to be a bit clattery and unfocused while not quite matching the force, catharsis or bliss of the greatest Magma material (MDK, WI, De Futura or even Eliphas Levi, in its way). Ironically, the most revelatory track on the album is the atypical and McCoy Tyner-esque "Coltrane Sundia."
Let me know what you see that I do not.

My fiver:
1. Zao - Shekina
2. Weidorje - Weidorje
3. Magma - Kohntarkosz
4. Magma - Kobaia
5. Magma - MDK or Udu Wudu
Not sure if Runaway Totem can be classified as Zheul, but their "Tep Zepi" album is just amazing, and so is Universal Totem Orchestra as well.

A wonderful track that saves an otherwise disappointing album.
For me Kohntarkosz is Vander's most successfully realised large scale composition, although Wurdah Itah is my overall favourite album from Magma's classic period. And what about the stunning K.A. ?

Hey Syzygy,
Forgive me if I'm being over-persistent, but can you give me a better idea of what about or where within Kohntarkosz you get "The Blast." It's a trip but doesn't give me that rush, that shot into the stratosphere, that, say, MDK does. For example, in MDK, there is the concluding movement that just picks up steam and explodes into bar after bar of increasing intensity, peaking and peaking till it all comes to its strong conclusion. MDK has the highs/lows, brights/darks, heavy/lights, male/female choirs and a propulsive force. What about Kohntarkosz moves you in this way?
As for KA, it is truly great and I love it in the way I love almost everything that Magma has released. However, I remember Stella mentioning the album back at a show in, like, 2000 so delayed desire left me with overly-high expectations. As good as KA is, I can't say there is anything compelling enough about it to make me throw it on rather than MDK or WI.
