I'm interested in compiling a list of bands(and albums) that might be described as symphonic proto prog. That is to say early prog with mellotron(the more the better

Try Love-Forever Changes. The use of a string section in rock rarely worked better.Procol Harums second album Shine On Brightly is also a good bet.Don't forget the most important works- Moody Blues, Days Of Futures Past,Threshold of a Dream or Family- Music from a Dolls House and Family Entertainment.

Oh yeah I know Family too but only the first two. Great stuff. Music from a dolls house is certainly a candidate for first prog album or at least proto prog.

I don't agree with the proto prog tag/label but what do you think about the mk. 1 incarnation of Deep Purple... there was no proto in that prog hahahhah. |

SPRING, FANTASY and MELLOW CANDLE fit perfect in your list. There others from that period that fit more in the psychedelic label. They used Hammond not mellotron.

The first FAIRPORT CONVENTION album from 1968 has a fantastic dark
progressive track called "The Lobster". A great pity they didn't pursue that direction further. |

^^ Agree... interesting that many of the aforementoned bands (especially those mentioned by erik neuteboom) haven't found their way into the archives.... and Kaleidoscope is here! (not to mention Beatles! compared to Cressida and Marsipulami, they are trash! no offense fans! I have a pile of one shot bands in mp3's (and my mp3 dealer keeps on bringing me!!!) but I have to search and listen somehow to give a clear idea... hmmm. what about Man?

Listen to Turkish psych/prog; you won't regret:
Baris Manco,Erkin Koray,Cem Karaca,Mogollar,3 Hürel,Selda,Edip Akbayram,Fikret Kizilok,Ersen (and Dadaslar) (but stick with the '70's, and 'early 80's!) |

Though not an a exclusive symph prog band, the Beatles beat the Moody Blues on this with Strawberry Fields Forever and A Day in the Life. I am the Walrus and much of side two on Abbey Road are other examples The Moody Blues are a great example though.

ELO is another Proto Symphonic Prog band also if too little Prog. But I think that is another example.
APHRODITE'S CHILD is another example. Not only for "666" but also for the rest of discography (I recommended the compilation "The Singles" by BR Record)
INDIAN SUMMER in Heavy side of Prog is another great band
