Topic: Dream Theater’s Dark Side Released Posted: April 02 2006 at 23:26 |
I thought I would mention that Dream Theater recently released their live
CD/DVD where they cover Dark Side of the Moon at the April 1st 20th
Anniversary show (I'm not sure if the CD is released to the public yet,
though I know they said it was limited edition.) I purchased the CD only
but I just wanted to show the track listing to show how they covered
much more than just Dark Side. It's a 2-disc live album where the first
disc is from one show where they only covered Dark Side of the Moon.
The second disc contains various Floyd covers that the band has done
throughout the years.
Disc Two:
1. Echoes Pt. 1 (12:00)
2. One of these days (6:24)
3. Sheep (9:42)
4. In the Flesh? (2:56)
5. Run Like Hell (1:58)
6. Hey You (4:49)
7. Comfortably Numb (7:22)

They are a great band, but doing all these covers is getting a bit ridiculous. I will stick to the original Dark Side of the Moon by the original band.

Of course we will all be sticking to the original. I just think it's interesting to
hear a band like Dream Theater that sounds (pretty much) NOTHING like
Pink Floyd plays some of their songs. I also thought it was cool that they
added extras (echoes and sheep being the ones that caught my eye the
most.)
As Portnoy puts it "As much as all 5 of us have been influenced by Floyd
stylistically, Pink Floyd may very well be the polar opposite of what Dream
Theater has become known for. We are generally known for over-the-top
shredding, speed, dexterity and general musical acrobatics. Wheras Pink
Floyd was always about the complete opposite side of the spectrum: mood,
dynamics, slow & patient playing and much that breathes... it was never
about the individual musicians, but more about the collective atmosphere."

I respect that they will admit that...

Hmmmmm..... Like? Yes; influenced by? Not sure...
I'd certainly be interested in hearing this; their occasional nods toward Floyd have in the past been well done, so I'm intrigued as to whether they can pull off the entire DSOTM; I think a great deal of restraint would be required on the part of John Petrucci & (especially) Mike Portnoy.

DT is raising money
But I'm really really curious about that one. Making covers of Metallica is not surprising, because one easily could hear it in DT's music now and then, so cover version of "Master Of Puppets" wasn't that big surprise.
But now we're talking about Pink Floyd! Completely different band, Dream Theater has absolutely nothing to do with Pink Floyd. And that's will be interesting.

I've heard a (very crapy) bootleg of the Lndon performance and though the sound qualaty was rubbish it was well done by DT.

You should hear the bootleg of the same gig they did in Amsterdam. It's pretty damn good quality, and in my humble opinion, the cover is pretty good too!

The Dark Side of the Moon session was recorded live at the Hammersmith
Apollo in London on October 25th, 2005. The bonus songs were all recorded
from different years ranging from as early as 1995 to as new as March 9,
2006 (Sheep.)
As for the cover of the album Dark Side of the Moon. I can't believe how well
Dream Theater covered it. Again, they are a prog metal band that essentially
sounds nothing like Pink Floyd and they did a great job. I've never heard
Petrucci and Rudess play with so many sounds and atmospheres and LaBrie's
vocals actually sound very good. It's definitely worth a listen.

I belive it can be interesting to hear what DT makes out of the Floyd covers. They'we been doing a few good one's in the past. But only a few.

I haven't heard it, but it was made available for the first time to purchase at the Radio City gig Saturday night. I was there but spent my money on a T-shirt.
It will be available for online purchase soon.

It's not about trying to be as good as the orignal, it's about playing your influences and inspirations with fans considered as honoring a great band. It's not like they are trying to say "look, we played DSOTM, we are better than pink floyd"

Does anyone else think that Darkside of the moon is a bit over-rated when compared to other Pink Floyd albems? I mean I think Meddle is a far better albem with Darkside of the moon maybe being their 4th or 5th best.
