Must lyrics have a meaning? Interesting question.
I reckon there are two schools of thought on this: it seems to me that either a) lyrics should be intelligent and sophisticated, requiring a certain amount of thought in their construction and in their analysis (which is all part of the fun) or at the very least emotive and expressive, or b) totally meaningless but nevertheless serving to enhance the music. Anything that falls between these two extremes is basically vocal doodling or mind-numbing "pop" in my opinion, and there's far too much of that around already. Personally, I would prefer more instrumental music; if you can't come up with interesting lyrics and/or don't have a strong voice capable of getting your message across, then shut up and let the music speak! No they MUST not necessrilly, for example:
But there are other bands in which lyrics have meaning, the most evident case is Genesis:
And I could go for hours, because almost every Genesis song has a story, their style was absolutely narrative, and as Genesis we have other bands like Kansas (Even made a song about Howard Huges) or Jethro Tull (Most of thier lyrics have a meaning). But this are different perceptions of music and lyrics, I like the narrative style more, but that's personal choice only. Iván |

Almost always. It doesn't have to be deep, oblique, and allusive, like much of Gabriel's work; but it bothers me if the lyrics don't mean something (unless it's Syd Barrett, just because he pwns). Because to me, it seems like the lyricist is being lazy and taking a shortcut if the lyrics are random nonsense. |
