Topic: New super group? Posted: March 30 2006 at 14:51 |
I just read on Drummer's Digest.com that Mike Portnoy, Steve Wilson, and Mikael Akerfeldt want to do an album together. Both Mike and Steve said they want the band to be heavy, but Mikael wants it softer. Could be very cool.
If you are wondering...
Portnoy=Dream Theater
Wilson=Porcupine Tree
Akerfeldt=Opeth

WOWWWW!!!!...can´t wait for that experiment...three solid musicians, three different styles, but common roots, three nationalities...SUPERGROUP!!!
Who will play the guitar?? Wilson or Akerfeldt?? My vote goes for Akerfeldt, even though Wilson is also a great performer, but I bet he will compose most of the tracks.,

But the question is: When will the album be for sale?
I won't have high expectations for it so that it won't dissapoint, but I'm lookiing forward to this.

Album wont be out for a while. Portnoy said they haven't started anything yet. It may not even happen, who knows.

There will have to be a lot of acquiescing from all parties for it to work, I think. Wilson seems like he's a bit too full of himself. Portnoy will work well with any metal band, and Akerfeldt would need to cease growling completly to get my attention. Seeing that he wants the album to be softer, this might not be a problem.

Yep, read that as well. Sounds very interesting indeed!
But hey, didn't Steve Wilson quite recently mock bands like Dream Theater, and said he didn't like them (which I understand, heheh)? Wonder if this 'supergroup' is set up for the music, or for the money...?

I hope its mellow and similar to Opeths "Damnation", where Wilson played some georgeous mellotron and sang and wrote the lyrics for one song.

Oh God I hope no!!!
I'm a fan of all those three guys but i hate cash-cow side projects!
The only great one i've listened is Liquid Tension Experiment...but stop it's enough!
and please...stop Mike Portnoy and all his terrible tribute projects...Betles covers, Zeppelin covers, Who covers! please stop!!!

I believe Wilson has already worked with Portnoy. Wasnt he a guest musician for OSI? I think hae sang one song.
And Portnoy isnt doing it for the cash, he is just one of the hardest working musicians around today, and I think thats very cool. He just likes to create and play!!

As if Portnoy needs another paycheck. Surely he's in the highest paid progressive rock band out now!

Wilson sang and co-wrote the song SHUTdown on the OSI album. What amuses me is people treat OSI like it's some Mike Portnoy band or project.OSI is the brainchild of Kevin Moore.
