I have seen Queen discussed in these pages and on members "Desrert Island Discs" lists.  Their albums (at least the early ones) show eclecticism, musicality, and technical skill.  I consider Queen one of my favorites even though all my other favorites are more solidly in the prog realm.  So I put it to you folks...is Queen prog?

I would say not! I have been into them since they started & their 1st 3 albums are their best! Just top quality hard rock & nothing else. Maybe Queen 2 had a touch of prog, but to me it's just hard rock! I suppose a lot of people will say Races & Opera are prog but i don't know if they are!

They were a glam rock band, with some progressive elements, especially on their first 5 albums.

(See any number of prior threads on this old dead horse that you are pointlessly flogging, folks!)Dead

Answer: "what is prog?" is entirely up to you. What does it really matter what others (especially strange strangers) think of your collection/choices for "prog" status?

Queen are here. Stern Smile

Rock out: "Happy little day, Jimmy went away, met his little Jenny on a public holiday...."

O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!'

I can't wait for the Sex Pistols to be added here.

Shocked "Entirely up to you" in the privacy of your own home, that is!

queen were hard to pin down style-wise in the early days, though considering they were described at the time as "the last of the heavy rock bands" or "glam rock" they did amazingly well in their career. but i would never describe them as prog. i was lucky enough to see them at hammersmith odeon in '75 when the whole show was built around "bohemian rhapsody", they were bloody amazing!

They're not a prog band, but they recorded some pretty progressive music.

even though the first 3 queen albums are proggy, i feel that towards the end of the 70's queen had lost any of the conceptual threads of the earlier albums. Queen became masters of stadium rock & i feel this narrowed their progressive scope, indeed queen changed with the times & consequently contemporary popular taste. Does this make them prog?

Personally, I do not like Queen. I think they had many prog elements in their sound at least until 1977-1978, and they deserve to be here. Two questions:

a) Are Queen a prog band? Yes, I think they can be seen as a prog band.

b) Are they a good prog band? No, in any sense at all!!!

No. They were an eclectic, inventive mainstream pop/rock band that liked
to borrow from whatever music was current (glam, prog, disco and so
on).
