This Saturday on Radio 4 at 10.30 am there is a programme called The Wizard. Its about Prog and features Kieth Emerson.

I'll try and be in for this, but I'm more likely to be in a ditch somewhere, as is normal for a Saturday. Do you happen to know if the show can be listened to via the BBc website ...after the event??

Saturday 1 April 2006 10:30-11:00 (Radio 4 FM) Investigating the phenomenon known as
Prog Rock. John Aizlewood discovers what it was, and asks why it became
the genre that dare not mention its name.
Born out of jazz and
killed off by the Punk movement, Progressive Rock spawned numerous
mind-altering album sleeves and became the catalyst for stadium rock
pomposity.
With contributions from some of the most important
progressive rock musicians, My Wizard asks why such a disparate group
of bands were labelled as 'prog' when their influences incorporated
styles as diverse as classical, jazz, folk and blues. Contributors include Keith Emerson from ELP; Ian
Anderson from Jethro Tull; Rod Argent from The Zombies and Argent;
Fish, ex-Marillion, Heather Findlay from
Mostly Autumn; Hawkwind's Dave Brock and Simon Frith, Professor of Music at Edinburgh University.
This was taken from the Radio 4 web site, it doesn't say if it will be repeated. Andy, you'll just have to get out of the ditch a bit earlier, you p*sshead. I may have to reconsider going for a beer and curry with you now.

If I get someone to call me at 10.00pm and order me a taxi to pick me up from the ditch it'll be fine.
The local taxi company are used to 'Father Jacks' Saturday routine!

Heather Findlay has just cited Curved Air as the only female fronted prog rock from the glory days. How could she forget Rennaisance!?
Dont agree with comments Ian Anderson is making either; about prog being neither good or bad. He seemed to state this as fact, rather than expressing an opinion. Hah! What does he know!

Just listened to this. Let's remember this is a short mainstream BBC
documentary, so it was bound to be brief and ocassionally mis-informed.
Look at it this way: IT WAS A 30 MINUTE RE-EVALUATION OF PROGRESSIVE
ROCK BROADCAST INTERNATIONALLY.
In my opinion, that's something worth celebrating.

Oh, I agree. Any mention of prog in the mainstream has to be worth sdomething. I really thought this was going to be on late at night, not on a saturday morning.
Being on Prog Archives has made me a terrible pedant, who believes he knows better than the bands themselves!
