I have to say, definitely Dream Theater's A Change of Seasons gets my vote. So cinematic, IMO. An opus in prog. And I love Dead Poets Society, so that probably helps. I also love 2112 though.

Oh man, TOUGH choice... my favorite long song depends on what band I'm really into at the moment of my voting. Seeing as it's Jethro Tull, Thick as A Brick gets my vote.

My all time favorite long compostions include The Flower Kings "The Truth Will Set You Free," The Mars Volta "Cassandra Geminii," The Tangent "In Earnest," and Porcupine Tree "The Sky Moves Sideways" (34 minute complete version).

So many good ones to choose from, so difficult ......

I voted for Thick As A Brick cos it has been so important to me for so long, but then, so has Echoes. Oh damn.

Another one missing is The Song Of Scheherazade by Renaissance.

  • Octavarium
  • A Change of Seasons
  • Six Degrees of Inner Tubulence (if considered one song)
  • Shine on you crazy diamond (if considered one song)
  • Blackwater Park (Opeth)
  • The Odyssey (Symphony X)
  • The Light (Spock's Beard)
  • and especially All of the Above and Duel with the Devil (from Transatlantic)!

Close To The Edge and Supper's Ready. But I consider Octavarium by Dream Theater, The Truth Will Set You Free by The Flower Kings, and All Of The Above by Transatlantic.

Music is a form of meditation.

I realize this will date me, but I always considered a "long song" or a "prog
epic" to be one that filled up at least one side on an LP (you know... large
black two-sided vinyl disk that usually got scratched up way too easily).
Therefore, I would agree with those that do not consider Cinema Show,
etc to be "long." Great songs, to be sure, but not "long."

Anyway, I voted for Supper's Ready. For many reasons, not least of which
are that it was the first epic I ever heard and literally changed my life.
