You need both. If you're not skilled to play you can't create melodies. I like
more emotional players.
One likes to believe
In the freedom of music
But glittering prizes
And endless Compromises
Shatter the illusion
Of integrity

I see this turning into a shred bashing thread.

Anywho, I haven't voted coz like FragileDT said, you need both.

Sure, you need to be creative, but there's nothing funnier than seeing people *try* to do stuff they blatently can't (And there's a lot of that where I live).

Howe has both? Mmmm, not really. He was a skillfull player when compared with other guitar players from early 70's but I can't imagine him playing the speedy and technical solos by some modern guitarists as Vai, Petrucci or even Trevor Rabin. In fact when he plays on stage  some of the Trevor Rabin stuff he never tries to play his solos. He just couldn't do it the same.  When Eddie Van Halen came up in 1977 with a whole new guitar technique all the guitar players that supposed to be skillfull before him ceased to be so skillfull. The post-Van Halen guitar players are usually much more advanced technically than the early 70's guitarists.

That said, I must say that I love Howe's playing, but I consider Steve Howe more a "creative" guitar player, and I prefer him over most of the "skillfull" players.

But of course the best would be a mix between creativity and technical ability.

I would go with Creativity

Omar Rodriguez Lopez isn't exactly that good technically but i enjoy hearing him over the John Petrucci's and Joe Satriani.

But anyone who thinks Steve Vai isn't creative with his melodies should absolutely listen to his latest album and the song K'm Pee Du Wee in Particular

without melodies, skill is nothing. Why do you suppose the majority of shredders like Rusty Cooley do little except make instructional DVDs? Because they suck at making actual MUSIC.

Both are preferable, but creativity over technical skill in the end.

I think you need to have both, but in order to play melodies, you have to have the skill to pull them of musically.

I disagree, sorry.. Btw which album of Vai makes you think like that? There is an album called the 7th song, full of melodic and ballad songs (still instrumental though) like For The Love Of God, Tender Surrender, Hands On Heart.. Do you think these songs aren't melodic? Big smile

Oh and I would say a combination is the best, but maybe the feeling is more important...Wink

Creativity. If you only can play solos, you're worth nothing in a band.

Steve Hackett is a perfect example for this poll. He can create amazing melodies, but for some reason he has never learned how to bend properly.
