What I really like about the old progressive rock bands is that they
all had their own unique and individual sound. King Crimson
didn`t sound like Yes. Fruup didn`t sound like Triumvirat. Gentle Giant
sounded only like Gentle Giant. Guru Guru sounded like they had just
arrived on the mother ship from another dimensional plane etc. These
bands weren`t even called progressive rock bands back when I started
getting into this music circa. 1971-72. Although I have tried to get
into some of this newer stuff ( I didn`t even know there was a
progressive rock movement still going until I stumbled on to this
web-site a couple of years back by accident ) I find myself only
buying re-issues and stuff from the vaults such a Gentle Giant`s
Under Construction and very few bands from the 90`s such as Anekdoten (
they can sound like Crimson at times ), Rammstein, Laibach, Primus,
Dream Theater ( because they do killer cover versions ) and I even
bought the most recent Blondie album and am going to see both Blondie
and Dream Theater here in Montreal this month. Am I just an old snob? I
really couldn`t see myself going to one of these progfests. Any
comments?

I'm kind of confused what you're talking about in this post. New Prog vs Real
prog? I consider new prog (if it is really prog) to be real so I can't see what
you're talking about. I'm sick of old vs. new comparisons and I'm a much
bigger old progressive fan (though I don't even think, besides the title, that
that is your arguement.)

real new prog doesnt sound anything like fake new prog or old real prog.

Your topic title is too much of a flame by immediately suggesting that new prog efforts aren't "real prog".
Maybe you just prefer the works of the "old guard", so to speak, though
I'm not even sure what your complaint about new artists is. That
they all sound the same? That they are too derivative of the 70s
bands? In any case, I assure you that for many members here, the
newer prog efforts are quite "real".
EDIT: I see you have corrected yourself.  But still, what's the problem?

Are you trying to say that every well-known 70's classic prog group didn't sound like any other well-known 70's classic prog, and hid its influences so successfully that nobody could see who they were influenced by? Well, I tend to disagree. Those groups were all influenced by classical, rock music, jazz fusion and intellectual rock collectives listed under 'Proto-Prog' in this website, it's just that they did their best at sounding unique. However, the similarity in their style was so obvious that now they are all called 'Symphonic Prog'(I'm talking about the most well-known groups).
Speaking of the groups of today, some are not shy to admit that they are retro or tribute groups who pay tributes to works of the 70's idols, such as The Flower Kings and Spock's Beard, whereas other groups, who even these archives' members aren't very well exposed to, take away the neccessary elements of the above-mentioned groups and manage to produce something new and innovative, thus progressing the genre and not turning it into a derivative cliche'd joke.
Of course, many will reply to this thread and tell you that modern prog is all about paying tributes to the legends, but I've been given a chance to hear more and that's why I disagree.

Of course they're going to sound similar to the older groups. When you make any music, there's bound to be something in it that someone else has done before.

many latter-day prog bands such as Dream Theater and Porcupine Tree are every bit as original sounding and relevant as the "old guard" Yes and Genesis era if not better - it seems to me prog rock has a very bright future!

I've got bored with the likes of Flower Kings,Spock Beard and Transatlantic because they are lacking something distinct that could be called their own.However Muse,Radiohead,Par Lindh Project,GYBE and The Mars Volta have all created their own distinct sounding music just like ELP,Yes and Genesis did in their day.

For me, there is too much brain and too less soul in music of most modern bands. Listening to their records I often have the impression that songs are rather constructed than made by inspiration. Of course, it's only my opinion.

I agree with your statement,back in 70s music had sense,today music is more an industry than art ,and many bands seems to lack on emotions,music is about feelings and imagination just like life is,altough there is still bands with emotive music like Riverside,Porcupine Tree,Opeth,etc...and i love all of them,even if we are living in a cold and sophisticated world there is still music to enjoy

There's plenty of good "new" prog around - Salem Hill, Tangent, IZZ and Glass Hammer to name but a few.

Well i dont even find a reason to compare them  . There is Lot's of good original old prog and lot's of original new prog.
