Go grab your copy of Tubular Bells on vinyl.

Ok, now that you've done that, flip the vinyl to the back cover and look at the bottom left hand corner.

There is a caption that reads "This stereo record cannot be played on old tin boxes no matter what they are fitted with. If you are in possession of such equipment please hand it into the nearest police station."

I am perplexed.... I believe this is an obvious joke, and I believe I have an alright sense of humour, but I cannot laugh at this; perhaps i'm not prog enough? Geez..

I've always wondered what that means. If it's a joke, I don't get it. Tin boxes???

It was one of the first albums I ever bought (and how people scoffed at me - Mike Oldfield - who's he?).

My take on it was that around that time, a lot of albums said something like "stereo but may be reproduced on mono equipment" and that this was just Mr Oldifeld's way of saying "this is a serious album - don't play it on your old mono rubbish."

Hey, now that's a little funnier.

Spot on CandyAppleRed, a joke lost with the passage of time.

The usual message read "Stereo records give full stereo reproduction when played on a stereo record player. The can be played on most modern mono record players fitted with a lightweight arm and pick up head and the sound reproduction will be monaural. If you have doubts and wish to avoid damaging your equipment or records, consult your dealer".
