Obviously prog doesnt have near the amount of "standard Repertoire" of jazz of classical or even other forms of rock but has anyone noticed songs that prog bands cover more than others? The only one I can think of is "Carry on Wayward Son" by Kansas which has been covered by Dream Theater and Yngwie Malmsteen amoung others.

Malmsteen covered UK-In the dead of night and Rush-Anthem. Dream Theater have covered a lot of bands and are in serious danger of becoming a covers band |

Thats a very good question. I guess the nature of prog ( to be inventive ) really doesn't call for covers.I'd have to say, if there are any tributes being given in prog, it would have to go to the classics, Bach, Mozart, Brahms and the like.

If you look at the different bands that release Live Cds from some of the American Prog fests like Nearfest and Rosfest you'll find many covers. Cryptic Vision did a progledy of 3-4 covers, Glass Hammer did Portrait by Kansas etc. At Calprog it is a tradition (OK it is a three year tradition) that the bands must play a cover of a classic prog song. Last year we were treated to 1. Soundchaser (yes) by Spiraling 2. The Knife(genesis) by bubblemath 2112(rush) (Overture and The Priest) by Tiles Close to Edge(yes) by IZZ (IZZ also did the Cage Medley the previous year) Soon(yes) by the Flower Kings You can hear a couple of those by buying the official Calprog bootleg at Calprogs site. WWW.Calrpog.com for those too lazy to look it up. It's only $10.00

IZZ did Close To The Edge? - I'd love to hear that, shame it's not on the bootlegs. Didn't Spock's Beard release a cover of "South side of the sky" on some editions of "Snow"? |

The Ozric Tentacles covered "Master Builder" by Gong. So did Steve Hillage, although with him "covering" is not quite the right expression. Many bands felt the necessity to cover a Beatles song. Hawkwind did a cover version of "Gimme Shelter" by the Rolling Stones once. Steve Hillage did covers of Donovan ("Hurdy Gurdy Man") and George Harrison ("It's All too Much"). Peter Hammill covered a Herbert Grönemeyer song ("Smile"; he translated the lyrics into English though). To name a few. I could go on and on...

I heard PF's "Cymbaline" covers by Hawkwind and RPWL. Also RPWL covered "Welcome to the machine". I think that apart the creativity issue, very characteristic of prog artists and bands, Progressive has already a real history, with amazing songs and great musicians/composers; consequently, covers shall be more common in the future IMO. In Spain, Medina Azahara covered "El lago" by Triana. Besides, Senogul's covered several Classics http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_CD. asp?cd_id=10740 I haven't heard the covers, but the other CD by Senogul is really nice |

Mostly Autumn did a whole show of Floyd covers, half of which were horrid, the other half being brilliant, if not better than the originals.

Canadian rockers April Wine did a suprisingly good cover of 21st
Century Schizoid Man on their 1978 album " Harder Faster " which even
got airplay on FM radio. I`ve got a double CD from a little known
American band, Controlled Bleeding, who do a killer version of The
Talking Drum. Fripp would approve.
Also saw a band called Mahavishnu down in NYC that played nothing but Mahavishnu Orchestra pieces and did an awesome show which included Noonward Race, Dance of Maya and other tricky stuff from Birds of Fire and The Inner Mounting Flame. I was told that McLaughlin himself gave the band his stamp of approval. |
