Wow, I forgot about that one!(the live one) Haven't heard it in along time...I'll have to dig it out and give it a listen. Did you know the line-up on Donovan's original version is: Donovan - acoustic guitar, vocals Jimmy Page - electric guitar John Paul Jones - bass John Bonham - drums |

Dylan has stated that when he plays Watchtower he feels as though it's a tribute to Hendrix. |

Primus did an amazing cover of Master of Puppets by Metallica. The Mothers' version of The Turtles' Happy Together is amazing. They had the same vocalists, so it's easy to see who's wins. ELP's version of Pictures at an Exhibition |

Rush - Summertime Blues.
The rest of feedback doesn't stand up to the origianals unfortunately. Although, I had my mp3 on random and The Seeker came on and not until about halfway through the song did I realize it was not The Who's version |

One of the great cover versions of all time (including one of my favorite Hillage solos) - BaldJean also got there first with her reference to Spooky Tooth's version of 'I Am The Walrus' - dark, brooding, slightly disturbing, but wonderful! A lot of Beatles covers have been mentioned here, so to put in my personal favorite: Aerosmith's version of 'Come Together' from their 'Live Bootleg' album... recorded, I think, during a soundcheck (either that, or there's only 3/4 people in the audience); raw in the extreme, but for sheer (sweet?) emotion... Yeah, sorry about that. I had a dyslexic moment, and thought the was the "NON-PROG Music Lounge", which seemed appropriate to me, as one of my examples wasn't prog, and I didn't want to limit the responses to prog only. Mods, feel free to move it if you feel the need. |

That's absolutely great! I have heard "Mistreated" sung by Coverdale, Dio and the great Glenn Hughes, but I think Rainbow's version on their "On Stage" album is the best. |

I prefer Van Halen's version of You Really Got Me to The Kinks'. Might as well be predictable and say I prefer Rush's version of Heart Full Of Soul to the original and their storming version of The Seeker..... |

Hmm... did you read this whole thread? Almost everyone I've ever met likes Hendrix' version of "All Along the Watchtower" better than Dylan's. |

Not really in the progressive vein but...
I have always preferred the Blues Brothers version of 'Sweet Home Chicago' to the original performed by Robert Johnson and written by ? - had to look that one up... apparently credited to one Woody Payne. That movie turned me onto Rhythm & Blues! Elwood: What kind of music do you usually have here? |

My favorite covers are:
Oingo Boingo's version 'I Am The Walrus'. It rocks hard and kicks the original in the balls. Kevin Gilbert's version of 'Kashmir'. Haunting, beautiful. What a loss. Hendrix's 'Watchtower' of course. The Cure's version of 'Purple Haze' The Residents version of 'Satisfaction' Most cover versions are terrible as they do nothing original with it. I don't want to hear a different band play another artist's song note for note. What is the point of that? It's only truly effective when the artist completely reshapes it and makes it their own, yet retains enough of the original to make it a homage. All of the above do that splendidly. Cheers |

I agree that Hendrix's version of "All Along The Watchtower" is better than Dylan's. I also really like Van Halen's "You Really Got Me" and The Who - "Summertime Blues" |
