Topic: Wheres Kansas ? Posted: March 07 2006 at 10:23 |
Kansas is Americas premier Progressive Rock band and have served the prog world some great music for over many years, but judging by the Top 50 Kansas misses out for a position ? my question is do you think Kansas deserve to be in the prog archives top 50 for atleast one of their CD`s released (say .. Leftoverture, Masque, Song for America, Point of Know Return, Two for the Show or Kansas) nothing is there not one mention of anything they have done so Wheres Kansas ? Kansas not being mentioned in Prog Archives top 50 leaves me feeling a bit disillusioned

Yes, they deserve that. What would your choice of album be ?
Mine would be Masque or Point of Know Return.

Yes you're right!
...also considering that in the Top 50 you can find bands like Riverside, Ayreon and Supertramp...![](smileys/smiley5.gif)
so...absolutely I vote YES!
[...my choice goes to Song for America most of all...and Leftoverture...]

A resounding YES! ![](http://rds.yahoo.com/S=96062883/K=Kansas+city+vicinity+map/v=2/SID=w/l=IVS/;_ylt=A9G_RqyLqA1ElU4By5ejzbkF;_ylu=X3oDMTA4NDgyNWN0BHNlYwNwcm9m/SIG=1281v8jil/EXP=1141832203/*-http%3A//www.wichitahotels.com/graphics/052899073X.jpg)

Okay, let's calm down , these lists are not really reflective of the truth. They are based a bit on how many reviews as well as the average ratings (check out the threads for algorythms on how this is set up)
Yes, Kansas should be in the top 50 groups of the Archives and in the albums at least for Leftoverture or the debut , but fanboys constantly skew the ratings by voting for their fave bads and then vote lowly on direct competitions in order to bring down competiting albums![](smileys/smiley11.gif)
Way toooooo much attention is paid by fanboys and others to those lists. I never look at them since I know they are skewed and really I could not care less which is number one![](smileys/smiley18.gif)
I do believe there are some lower form of living being that are obsessed with the number one (held by Tull's TAAB for quite a while) and I remember reading some idiot being happy that TAAB was out of the top 5: this lowlife might have been part of the skewing process![](smileys/smiley11.gif)
And you know what, the sad part is this this loser is probably proud of his action: but would he be so proud as to take a good look at his sorry life fgor he has spent maybe four months of his life at achieving such an important goal .
Believe me , nevermind those stupid top 100 list or any other kind of those.![](smileys/smiley4.gif)

While I've come to you way of thinking re. the top 100 over time, when I first viewed the website, I was rather mystified as to why TAAB was #1. Myself and my friends who were prog lovers would never consider anything by Tull to represent the apex of prog rock (nothing against Tull, but his music just doesn't reach the heights, imo). And as the premiere prog rock site, I think some may naively assume the list has a sort truthful authority among a wide range of prog fans (god, what a delusion that is!)
So I think perhaps you may want to consider how a new person viewing the list for the first time perceives it before throwing around derogatory terms, like "lower forms of living being" or "idiot" or "lowlife" or "loser". Wow, that's a pretty long list. Are you a diehard Tull fan? ![](smileys/smiley1.gif)
But like you I've come to see the list as a prog rock freak show, and as a two-headed calf is captivating in a strange way, so is the top 100 list.

And as the premiere prog rock site, I think some may naively assume the list has a sort truthful authority among a wide range of prog fans (god, what a delusion that is!)>>>> The premier prog rock site is nice compliment but the Archives are just two years old under the current form>> the goal is to become just that, ther premier prog site, but I still believe the road is long before we reach it. GEPR has no such list and Gnosis has one but not readily available
So I think perhaps you may want to consider how a new person viewing the list for the first time perceives it before throwing around derogatory terms, like "lower forms of living being" or "idiot" or "lowlife" or "loser". Wow, that's a pretty long list. Are you a diehard Tull fan? >>> I admit I was a little harsh with the name calling here , but these very annoying persons doing a fixation on such a list can irritate me beyond the point of belief>>> as for being a diehard Tull fan you might want to read GentleTull's three poll threads o last week to see how little he thinks of me as a Tull fan .
But I do regard TAAB as a top 5 of prog, still some 35 years later.I am not annoyed that TAAB lost top notch, but that some people collectively skewed their way into dislodging it. This is also being done for Dream Theater and there is a thread monitoring the Beatles's progress (although it is done humorously and it is interesting to see where they will stop their climb) since their inclusion, but you can just guess that some people would loose sleep if Sgt Pepper would get in the top 10!!! how's that for being a loser ????.UuuuuuuHhhhh!!!! ......... an anally driven proghead![](smileys/smiley36.gif)
You make a valid point of the newbie entering on site, but Gibraltar does not have such a list , and Progressive Ears do but to dig them out is something different and Gnosis requires a few days of understanding how to extract the data to get to such a list.
But like you I've come to see the list as a prog rock freak show, and as a two-headed calf is captivating in a strange way, so is the top 100 list.>>>![](smileys/smiley2.gif) |

All the ones in the top 10 are British. One reads Genesis, Yes, Floyd and as you go down the list itīs more Genesis, Floyd, Yes. The highest American Prog band is at number 12, Dream Theater. Kansas and Pavlovīs dog donīt even make the top 100.

I really don't think Kansas are meritorious of the Top 50. They had some good material, but I personally never found any of it that good.

I don't think KANSAS should be in the top 50 just because they released two or three prog albums ("Leftoverture" and "Song For America" and maybe the debut); the other stuff has nothing (or at least) to do with prog (IMO), they become AOR/Pomp rock.
P.S. PROTO KAW is more prog than KANSAS.

You can't really argue if their debut, Song for america, masque, leftoverture,
and point of know return are prog or not. Maybe you can start to argue at
monolith.
The list doesnt mean that much to me but Kansas should have at least 3 or 4
albums in the top 100 with 2 in the top 50 without question.

Funny discussion I found it !
To Sean Trane - I agree with you about the list being too important to some guys. Yet I would advise you to read your own words. If the list is not important then those who try so hard to promote their favorites and stop others deserves pitty and not hatred.
To all of us - nobody knows all prog bands & albums. It is possible that those we did not hear yet are better than what we allready know. There is no right & wrong here and the list is some kind of an avarage of many opinions.
About Kansas - Leftoverture is in my personal top 50 while the debut & song for america are very good albums but not in the same league of leftoverture (IMO). Point of know return has some great prog songs (hoplessly human, portrait & closet chronicles) but other songs less impressive. Monolyth is maybe non prog mostly but Angels have fallen is one of Kansas' great songs ever and is fully prog IMO.

The top 100 are ridiculous anyway; they only refer to best-known albums and don't say anything about real quality. A lot of excellent albums that easily beat most of the top 100 are missing, simply because they are not that well known.
