Topic: Vai: Question...? Posted: March 05 2006 at 18:59 |
I have The Ultra Zone, The 7th Song, and Reflections. I've heard his 80s works are good, but what kind of music are they specifically? Just shred, or something more like Satriani's early stuff. Or is it like his adventurous new stuff?

Vai's first album, "Flex-able" is a good work heavily influenced by Frank Zappa. If you like Zappa and Satriani this is the perfect mix.

Vai's "Passion and Warfare" is more like a heavy metal instrumental album, and a very good one. Here Vai shows off all his playing skills.

Passion and Warfare is awesome, Alien Love Secrets is pretty good, and although Sex and Religion is over the top, it's pretty fantastic,
and i still think Vai should be on the archives

Alien Love Secrets is my favorite.

In the freedom of music
But glittering prizes
And endless Compromises
Shatter the illusion

Passion and Warfare is the ultimate Vai album - absolutelly essential for every Vai fan. Everything we love (or hate) about him is there.
If you like weirder stuff, get both Flex-Able and Flex-Able Leftovers.

I love the song Firegarden Suite that's available here on PA; is the
rest of the Fire Garden album that good? And if I like that song, which
of his albums should I check out first?

The rest of the album is not really like that track. It's a really good album though, try to listen to it in a store before you buy it.
I would recommend the EP Alien Love Secrets to you ... Kill the Guy With the Ball is really amazing!

The Fire Garden Suite is one of Vai's most brilliant compositions, as is Kill the Guy with the Ball, IMO.
I've found the Fire Garden album to be one of Vai's more melody-focused releases. He seems to have returned back to his roots with Satch on a lot of the tracks. It's a great album. My fav, however, is still Passion and Warfare, with Alien Love Secrets a close second.

Yeah...you need Passion and Warfare. Classic Steve Vai. Flex-able is just like listening to Zappa. I like his earlier stuff a little more.
Passion is a must.
