RENAISSANCE was one of the best symphonic prog bands from the '70s; they released many good albums from '69 until '79; which is your favourite???

"Prologue" for me. The album was quite different at the time of its release. And of course, it was our introduction to the five octave ranged Annie Haslam.

I love the 1st one.  Kings and Queens describes the current political situation and the lying oligarchs who perpetrate it almost too perfectly:

I have everything fom Renaissance to Azure D'Or except Illusion. The first two were really a different band (later to reemerge as Illusion, of whom I have 2 albums, both very good).

Of the later line up, I love Turn of the Cards, Live at Carnegie Hall (one of the great live albums), Ashes are Burning and Scheherazade. Novella and Prologue are very good and A Song for all Seasons and Azure D'Or have their moments but are nowhere near their earlier masterpieces.

Nothing beats Live At Carnegie Hall. If you buy that one + Novella, you have the best of Renaissance. IMHO, of course  .

I may be a bit strange, but I vote for "A song for all seasons", allthough the album also has some weak moments. But I hold very "dear" memories to that record. I also think that the opening (Opening Out) is still among my all time favourite album opening songs.

My top 3 then would be:

1. A song for all seasons

2. Sheherazadeand other stories

3. Ashes are burning

Live at Carnegie Hall gets my vote (shame they couldn't put A Trip to the Fair on it.. I just love that song)

Ashes are Burning and Prologue right behind it.

number one--most definately, Ashes are Burning!!!!!

number two fav is  Turn of the Cards and

 

a tie for third place is Song for all Seasons and Novella

Indeed a though question. My vote went for "Ashes are Burning", although "Turn of the Cards" is also a masterpiece.  for the poll!

Now seriously, Live at Carnegie Hall is probably the best live compilation any Prog band has ever made.

  • Yessongs was recorded  too early in Yes career and misses a lot of later great Yes stuff,
  • Live 73 (Genesis) is incomplete, they wanted to make a double album to include Supper's Ready and Can Utility, but Mister Stratton Smith thought it was too risky.
  • Seconds Out has Collins on vocals  and destroyed many Steve Hackett parts mixing them loud enough to be listened only by wolves and  certain dog races.
  • Welcome Back my Friends is very good, but doesn't convince me totally.

Live At Carnegie Hall has the best version ever done of Sheherezade and includes essential material.

I prefer the Yarbirds line-up so no surprise that the debut wins out easily. Illusion, prologue are in my top five along with Ashes and Turn Of The Cards

After that they were wey tooooo............................. predictable and rather too soft for my liking
let's just stay above the moral melee
prefer the sink to the gutter
keep our sand-castle virtues
content to be a doer
as well as a thinker,
prefer lifting our pen
rather than un-sheath our sword
