Normal musical listeners USE music just as an instrument to have fun, look cool or to dance, Prog' fans go beyond, some of us are maniacs that devoure every Prog related recording or reading material and expend thousands of dollars buying albums that were released 30 or 40 years ago.

Some of us even buy the same album two, three or four times just because their's a a new bonus song or a special recording that sounds 1% beter than the original.

While normal music fans hear the music, we analyze it, investigate the roots, influences, structures, this make us seem that we take ourselves too seriously, but it's the opposite, because we sacrifice work and studies or even time with our families to dedicate to learn about the music we love or to write in Prog Archives and/or any other forum..

So we Prog' fans take life and ourselves less seriously than the average music listeners who only enjoy music during a party or with friends, while we breath Prog' and can't live without it.

It's funny, inside the forum people believe we take life too seriously, but outside the forum is the opposite.

Maybe not the younger ones, but those members 30 years old or more must have listened something like:

"What are you doing with your stupid music all day long, you're not a kid anymore, take life seriously, act as a normal person of your age"

Life is a paradox.

Perhaps. But it makes for interesting discussion until the inevitable name calling and personal attacks dominates the conversation. Then it becomes a matter of who is right and who is wrong and all objectivity is lost.

I think it's hard for "musicians" not to be serious sometimes, and it must be admitted, prog fans are more "musical" than most other "genres." I.E. classical musicians tend to be mostly more "serious" than even proggers at some points! Though we all know that proggers can be less serious/more humorous than your average joe, and often are!

I think it's like this: more serious when the time calls for it, yet more laid back or whatever when the time calls for it!
here i go

We need sense of humor, because if we hitted every person who said during our lives that we listen crap or asks us itelligent questions like  Did Peter gabriel sung in Genesis?  Who's that girl singing? (when you're listenig Your Move/All Good People) or Do this guys expect us to dance that music? we would all be in jail.

Iván

BTW: Welcome Prodigal, hope you enjoy our second home.

Well said! I agree. It's very true. I spend almost all of my free time doing something relating to music. Even when I'm hanging out with other people, I am thinking about music in some way or another. Thankfully, some of my friends and family take an interest, maybe not as strong (in most cases not even close) as mine, but I can still discuss with them.

I do take music very seriously. It is my passion, and I don't tolerate musical ignorance by my peers. Well, I mean, I understand their ignorance, but when they make ignorant statements about music, I can't stand it; Unfortunately, I can hardly attempt to justify my opinions and facts because a lot of the groudns for it are either personal sentiment or knowledge. Outside of music, I am very easy going and so on.

Umm...

You guys and girls speak as if there is any other music out there besides prog...

I don't know what you mean...

I mean I've heard such rumours but...

EDIT: I mean, when I go to bed at night, it's the sound of Gates of Delirium that goes through my head...

Sad? Maybe.

Awesome? Yes!!!!

Firsty, sorry for off-topic
Nice signature, Prodigal !
I played that on guitar, then was surprised that there is nothing special with the melody, but then I realised that I had been playing one halfnote like a quarternote(I am not good, just have learned some basics). And it made such a difference... Progressive rock is really unusual music

Do prog fans take themselves too seriously? Some
do. It gets to me sometimes the way some here tend
to run down other forms of music like punk or pop.
Sure, it's three chords and distorted guitars and
lyrics about lust but so what?
But then, this can be said about many forms of
music. Also guilty are many classical affectionados
(they tend to use that word alot). I found out recently
that Tchaikovski (sp?) is not taken too seriously in
classical circles. I didn't know but "1812 Overture" is
the classical equivelent of "Mr. Roboto". Or as
someone told me "Tchaikovski was the Barry
Manilow of his time".
There are some who love prog and take themselves
too seriously and some who think too highly of
themselves because of it. Some people "wouldn't
lower themselves" to actually liking something
non-prog. These people need to learn to apreciate
other forms of music.

But then....
Just last week, I read in Psychology Today about a
study that says intelligent people are drawn to
complex music, so what do I know?
"they locked up a man who wanted to rule the world.
the fools
they locked up the wrong man."
- Leonard Cohen

We take music seriously, but it should be taken seriously. Therefore I
disagree. We don't take it TOO seriously.
One likes to believe
In the freedom of music
But glittering prizes
And endless Compromises
Shatter the illusion
Of integrity
