On Gentle Giant..."I like it...I think."

On Mike Oldfield..."Why are we listening to classical?"

On Kayo Dot..."Ok, the music is starting to creep me out."

On Tool..."You listen to some weird music dude." (wtf, they're a very popular alt rock band!?)

On the Residents..."The keyboards are driving me crazy!"

On Fantomas..."These aren't really songs you can sing along to, are they?"

while watching DT - live at budokan :

"That singer must be gay" (i hate that comment about DT,YES, Rush etc.)

"They arent rock n roll enough"

While listening to Mars Volta "This sucks!!"

My friend who likes Marillion commented that Fish is totaly gay after watching Recital of The Script.

"why are the songs so long" used to be a normal statement from a friend of mine but now he likes Pink Floyd and Jethro Tull but he says they are not real prog.

I once had to drive a girl i know to a bar and she started talking the moment she entered the car but then suddenly Opeth - The Lepper Affinity starts playing and she got a really scared look and stayed quiet for the whole trip.

A friend of mine also once said something like "invisible touch is much better than this" when i showed him Dancing with the moonlit knight.

"It sounds like this was made on Quebase (Midi program) by an idiot."

Giving un-prog people a listen 2 Zappa is suicide!!!

Its like giving a pop fan a listen 2 any frigin LTE song... Death on the spot

Strangely Zappa is one prog artist that my non progs freinds do have some time for. I think they appreciate with his humour, and afew have remarked on what good musicans his band sound. This from guys who mostly like Hip Hop and techno..

Yes - 'They're making it up as they go a long' 'Hideous racket!' 'The singer sounds like a f***ing fairy'

Genesis - 'Gabriel was a real d!ck wasn't he! Dressing up as a flower, what a pretentious tw&t!' ' I wont listen to anything that involves Phil Collins. F**k that!' 'When does it end?'

VDGG - 'Do we really have to listen to heavy metal?'

Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!

"What on earth are we listening to?"

"What is that terrible noise?"

"Ah, that's better. I was wondering why my head was hurting" - after turning it off.

Funny topic ;) but very sad too :P

I remember this summer, my small little American cousin who is approximately 11 years old came at my home for 2 days, at night I have decided to put him some Pink floyd at Pompeii so that he will get quickly asleep , I have directly jumped to "Saucerful of secrets" he's first reactions was:

"When will they sing?"

and then:

"That's too dumb! :("   "what a dumb music :("  and "Oh now i understand, these guys are your friends or people from your family right ?"

LOL I laughed a lot :)

The next day I was showing him some of my cd's ( he weren't very interested but at least he was drawing attention at the covers), I took out Pink Floyd's Ummagumma and then he started screaming:

"OH i know them , these are the stupid guys from yesterday night!" and few seconds later (looking at them): "Are they gay or what ??"...

And this one almost everytime with friends:
"This is classical music"  - VdgG and Magma's MdK

Friend's wife's voice calling from the kitchen, when many of us were sitting in a post-pub haze listening to "The Rotters Club":

"WHAT'S THIS SH++?"

I'd have to say my wife's worst comment while listening to Porcupine Tree's Heartattack in a Layby .... "Why can't you put on something we all can enjoy?"   followed by "God I HATE this crap..." to Yes, Awaken.     Think I need a new wife

Two comments that I can see where the people were coming from (and I had to laugh).

1. Driving in a van w/some friends and "Watcher of the Skies" comes on the radio. My buddy listens with befuddlement for a while to the choppy organ and says [in an announcer-like voice], "Gretsky skates through the hole, he shoots, he SCORES!!!"

2. Listening to "Lemmings" from Pawn Hearts in the car and another friend (not exposed to prog) says, "It sounds like a twisted Mighty Mouse cartoon."

Watcher is a really good tune, and Lemmings is a truly great tune... but I can totally understand the thought processes behind these two comments!

My freind an me were at my house after school, just hanging out. He listens to rap. I sit down and I get on the computer, and like normal, my ITunes opens. My freind and me are new freinds at the time "So what music do you like?" He says. Without having a good way to explain it, I just say it's "Old Music."
Oh, thats cool, play some of it. So I proceed to put on Comfortably Numb. "WTF is this?" Moments pause "They were high, are you a druggie?"

Me: No.
Freind: ... I thought you said you liked old rock, not hippie music!
Me: This is old rock.
Freind: I thought you meant like...
Me: (after a couple of seconds) Like who?
Freind: ... Linkin Park
Me: Dude, Linkin Park isn't new.
Freind: They haven't come out with anything new in like... two years!
Me: So there old?
Freind: Yeah I'd say two years is pretty old. WTF is this slow crap?
Me: *Sighs* Druggie music, ok? Is that what you wanna here?
Freind: This isn't music!
Me: Then what is music?
Freind: Anything you can dance too. You can't dance to this.
Me: You like linkin park? (I put on and old tape of linkin parks song "Session", which is an instrumental) You like linkin park? Can you dance to this?
Freind: (talkin about comfortably Numb) Still pretty damn slow though...

Recently I've kinda gotten him into Genesis, and he likes ABitWpt.2, and he likes the intro to CN. Still says the solo is too long and too slow though.

I'm so lucky...I get away with playing Yes, Genesis, Floyd, etc in the car with my mum. I once managed the first 3 tracks from ITCOTCK without any remarks. Luckily the only things she hates are Gentle Giant and 72-74 KC. But generally I'm fairly polite and listen to 'halfway' stuff like 10cc and Steely Dan when in the car.

Her and my sister always sing along to The Musical Box too

I'm so prog, I clap in 9/8
