RAGNAROK (N-Z) "Ragnarok"
Review (Permanent link) by Graeme Lynch
Posted 6:40:43 PM EST, 2/20/2006

4 stars   Hello there, This is more of a message to Andre Jayet than a review. Andre, I like in Wellington, NZ and would love to try and get (buy/trade) a copy of Ragnaroks LP's or CD's (if they exist). Also do the master tapes for your music still exist? As a lover of early King Crimson and Genesis the thought of some top quality 'home-grown' prog really excites me!

Kind Regards, Graeme

NEUSCHWANSTEIN "Battlement"

2 stars   This album should win an award. That being 'THE MOST OVERATED ALBUM IN THE HISTORY OF PROGRESSIVE ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!'.

I purchased this cd over 10 years ago because of all the praise and references to Genesis. I hear no Genesis influence at all, early or mid-period. It sounds like most 2nd tier obscure prog bands of the seventies.

It has beautiful melodies. It has a very fluid sound, very much unlike Genesis they have no dynamic. The production is fair. The package and booklet are great as are all Musea releases. The vocals are weak and often out of key.

Reading the reviews on this site the praise goes on. I have friends who also revere this album as a lost gem. Don't get me wrong, it is a beautiful progressive rock album, but no where near the classic folks claim it to be. I think I would enjoy it more if it were not so over hyped.

To each his own, but stating that it is a "beautiful progressive rock album" and then giving two stars only? That sounds too much like an attempt to get the rating down.

Unless it is a clear mistake (like the guy who thought 1 star meant the best), I don't tend to challenge the rating given to a review.

Ragnarok dealt with.

ENGLAND Garden Shed
Review (Permanent link) by Ben Blake Mitchner @ 6:36:28 PM EST, 11/29/2005

1 stars  —  I know a lot of people who either claim this to be a masterwork of early Genesis meets Yes or who think it is a blatantly poor opportunistic venture by talentless hacks. I would go with the latter, but give it even more of a slamming than that. To this prog rock lover this is THE WORST EXPLOITATION OF PROGRESSIVE MUSIC EVER RECORDED AND STRICTLY TO AVOID! I had this album, and taped it. More and more times going back I am so horrified by the lyrics and "music" that I can't even get through the first track anymore. So what makes England so bad? For one thing, their name is a rude backstab against the country they came from, if there is one thing they don't represent it is the country of England. For another, you don't have to listen close to the lyrics of opening track "Midnight Madness" or the painful, agony inducing closer "Poisoned Youth" to know these are really sick people with a kniving obsession! Both tracks end with the main character stabbing himself to death in the most sick. violent, morbid, and horrifying manner. Add to the disgusting grotesque lyrics a drummer who can't keep time and who overcompensates by banging his fists into the drum kit like a bad Hollywood movie score, horrendously screeching tone deaf vocals, and useless screwing around on the keyboards and guitars in a blatantly awful imitiation of Genesis, and the only other band as awful as this is Barclay James Harvest. The tracks are too long, the influences merely a swipe and a copy, and the production horrific. I would expect this album to appeal to those who like BJH or Marillion, but whereas Marillion actually weren't horrible musicians I am strongly reminded of my most hated "symphonic" group BJH again, but with an even more unoriginal sound. BJH couldn't sing or play at all, and England can't either. Is there anything to redeem one moment of this album, even one good passage? No, there is not. This album is beyond bad, it is offensive and disgraceful. I have never heard another band from England who play and sing and write as horribly as this band does, and for the price an original goes for this is something to avoid at all costs. I may be a huge admirer of progressive music, but I know when I'm being taken for a ride and so should you. That's about all I have to say about this most horrendous album. They deserve to be denounced, brought before a court, and put in the dungeon of worst insults ever to music. BAD!

How can this be a serious review? Either the reviewer is completel MAD, or he is exaggerating to the point of being ridiculous, and the review should be removed. Come on, horrible musicians ? Screeching tone deaf vocals? Screwing around on keyboards and guitars? Drummer who can't keep time ?

I know, we are supposed to accept everyone's opinion, but seriously, no sane person can truly mean this about this album. He is obviously an asshole anways

Haha!! "I hear no Genesis influence at all, early or mid-period". He is obviously completely deaf, which makes him unqualified to make a music review !!

The England review came up a few pages back erlenst.

If you had to be "qualified" to write a review, we might not get quite so many. Wink

True; to a point, Easy.  But what I think he meant by "qualified" is that people must listen a few times (all good prog records take a few listens to get into; if it didn't, it'd be POP...lol) and THEN come up with an adequate basis for a review.  Even the worst albums will have something to dig in them.  The best records will have annoying parts.  Than again...taste is subjective.

By the way...I did a literal translation on that GG review...came up empty-handed.  All it said was bascially, "If you don't have this in your collection, you're missing out on a big part of 70's symphonic prog rock." Or some sh*t like that.  STILL wasn't a review.  More fanboy-ish than anything else.

DREAM THEATER "Falling Into Infinity"

1 stars   Well, this is probably the best album of this band. It's a pity that such great musicianship (everyone of them is really a perfect instrumentalist) is wasted. If they played as session musicians (each musician seperately) their talents would be usefull. Dream Theatre is up to it's neck - drowned in the worst possible music tradition - '80 pathetic heavy metal. Queensryche, Helloween, Yngiwe Malmsteen... Melodies are extremely banal, forms of songs and instrumental pieces are used up, solos are boring, arrangements uninspired. The way that La Brie sings makes it unendurable. Of course it is not progressive, but regressive, but the name "prog-rock" long ago lost it's primary meaning. So I can agree - this is "progrock". Very bad prog-rock. Great instrumentalists. With not a shade of gift for composing. With no musical taste whatsoever.

It's a review and it leaves you in no uncertain terms of how the reviewer feels about the album.

I can't see much reason to delete it....

Agreed. Not a great review but also not deletable.

P.S.: It seems that almost everyone is reviewing this particular album in the last 2 days.

There's in fact a "DT review fever" spreading thru PA provoking a War of Reviews.

2 stars   I have to agree with the left side on this manner. Despite the high musicianship showed on this album (and almost all of DT´s albums), the music seems hollow and without feeling.I don´t know what´s in this band that everybody likes besides the high speed solos coming from this guys who didn´t even finish their studies at Berklee College of Music. Berklee graduates who are into this genre like the real virtuoso Steve Vai can play faster solos than Petrucci and also show that he´s feeling what he´s playing, something that the music of DT doesn´t show. Another low point from this band is the fact that they´ve been playing the same thing ever since they started in the late 80s!! So, this band is really not for me and I see that I´m not the only one who thinks this way.

It's not an album review. It's all about "look guys how I hate them". Only ONE sentence deals with very album.

As much as I'm in favour of leaving honest Dream Theater reviews where they are, that one doesn't say anything about the album - it's a single-minded generalism about Dream Theater.

However, you're probably right - there are plenty of other DT reviews that say nothing at all about the music on the album...
